Meghan Markle is the Duchess of ‘no makeup’ makeup
Think the ‘no makeup’ look is boring? Think again

In the battle between no makeup vs makeup looks, it’s fair to say the more natural of the two is coming out on top. While contouring and graphic winged liner will always have its place in the makeup world, these days a more pared-back and radiant finish is prized. And perhaps the main reason why we’re all stepping away from our full coverage foundation is because more and more celebrities seem to be doing the same; the most notable of whom is Meghan Markle.
In fact, Meghan Markle’s ‘no makeup’ makeup look has become so popular that hundreds of YouTube tutorials have been filmed and thousands of articles have been written in an attempt to teach people the best ways to recreate her signature look. But what does her minimal makeup look involve? In an interview with Allure before she became a royal, Meghan walked through her day-to-day look: “My routine is very simple – I call it the five-minute face. It’s just Yves Saint Laurent Touche Éclat, curled lashes, mascara, ChapStick and a little bit of blush”.
In addition to keeping her look low maintenance and quick, one of Meghan’s top priorities is to ensure her freckles shine through her makeup. In an interview with Refinery29, the former actress said, “to this day, my pet peeve is when my skin tone is changed and my freckles are airbrushed out of a photoshoot”. Her long-time makeup artist, Lydia F. Sellers also explained to Refinery29, “every time I’d do her makeup, she’d say, ‘can we just make sure my freckles are peeking through? I don’t want a ton of foundation’”.
Although Meghan’s no makeup look has become iconic, she’s no stranger to making subtle changes on a regular basis. Here, we run you through the different ways the Duchess mixes up her signature look. Hint: She only ever has one hero at a time.
#1 / A sheer foundation finish
Meghan Markle’s freckles took centre stage at the DPA pre-Emmy Gift Lounge in 2009, proving the new royal has loved a more laid-back and natural approach to beauty from a young age.

#2 / A hint of eyeliner
In all the years we’ve been fans of Meghan, this is perhaps the most makeup we’ve ever seen her wear. While her look is far from over the top, eyeliner on both her upper and lower waterlines add a touch of drama we’re not accustomed to seeing on her.

#3 / A pop of highlighter
Meghan’s highlighter across her cheekbones (a look we don’t often see from the Duchess) proves how effectively an illuminator on the high points of the face can brighten up your complexion.

#4 / A matte finish
Although we love a glowing complexion, a radiant foundation finish can be harder to maintain during long days, especially when you don’t have time to touch up your makeup. We can only imagine Meghan opted for a matte foundation here in the hope it would stay in tip-top shape all day – a feat we think she nailed.

#5 / A peachy lipstick
While Meghan rarely opts for anything other than a natural lipstick shade, we love how she (subtly) branched out with this peachy hue. It still looks natural, but has the bonus of brightening her complexion.

#6 / A strip of false lashes
There’s no doubt about it, Meghan Markle’s wedding makeup will go down in history as one of the best. And while her natural base makeup heroed her glowing complexion (and freckles!), her false lashes elevated her ‘no makeup’ makeup look to wedding-worthy status.

#7 / A swipe of lip gloss
At her first public appearance after becoming a royal, Meghan made an oh-so-subtle change to her signature makeup look by adding a swipe of pink gloss to her lips. Very pretty and elegant, like any Duchess should be.

#8 / A touch of blush
The secret to a natural makeup look is enhancing what’s already there. Meghan does just that with an extra dose of blush to further accentuate her newlywed glow.

#9 / A smattering of freckles
While photos of Meghan Markle without makeup are rare on the Internet, this au naturel look at the Sentebale Polo is the most bare we’ve seen her skin in a while. With only a hint of bronzer across her cheeks, Meghan’s freckles are the hero of this stunning makeup look.
