Poppy's iconic frosted makeup in 'People We Meet On Vacation' was the work of a $35 glitter palette
The blue wig has us all in a chokehold, sure, but Poppy's makeup in 'People We Meet On Vacation' is equally as memorable. The glitter around the eyes in that viral scene? Beyond stunning. The terracotta shadow she sported in Tuscany? Heavenly.
Her makeup looks really didn't miss (besides in the 'sick' scene, of course, but hey that was for the plot) and for that reason, we feel the need to stock our makeup bags with all of Poppy's essentials. Or rather, the essentials used by the movie's incredibly talented Makeup Department Head, Sasha Grossman on the film's set.
Here's exactly what to shop to recreate Poppy's stunning 'People We Meet On Vacation' makeup moments...
Poppy Makeup: 'People We Meet On Vacation'
Poppy's Glitter Eyeshadow In 'People We Meet On Vacation'
Grossman dubbed the already iconic icy glitter shadow moment one of her "favourite looks to create for Poppy".
"For our New Orleans look, I wanted to play off [Costume Designer Colin Wilkes]' amazing costume and the fact that we knew we’d have an amazing wig moment from [Hair Department Head Tony Ward]," she explained of its origin.
"This look had to be unapologetically vibrant. Remember, (theme matters) Poppy’s colours in New Orleans for me were shimmery, iridescent, cool tones, and a departure from the warm colours we played with in Barcelona and Tuscany." More on those in a minute, but we obviously had to start with this glorious glittery eye.
"I wanted her to be her own light source, one you couldn’t look away from. [Actress Emily Bader] shined so dang bright every day, but this was one of my favourites to make."
As for products, Grossman confirmed that she used Lemonhead LA Spacepaste in 'Houdini' ($37.25 at Revolve), Miss Jo Baker x Bakeup gems [sadly currently unavailable, but we'll keep checking], and the NABLA Cosmetics Miami Lights Glitter Palette ($35 at Nabla Cosmetics) to "create the multidimensional eyes of [her] dreams."
Poppy's Barcelona Wedding Makeup In 'People We Meet On Vacation'
Another one of our favourite looks? The bronze-y moment we were blessed with in Barcelona. "For this special look, we wanted to have a blast," Grossman shared. "[Costume Designer Colin Wilkes] had the perfect knockout dress for Poppy, [Hair Department Head Tony Ward] gave her the old Hollywood waves to match, and the makeup got to combine the base warm brown tones she was already wearing, with a little more smoulder than before."
The storyline always played into the makeup look, Grossman confirmed. "Poppy and Alex had already crossed the friendship line, and I wanted Poppy to absolutely sparkle and glow. I used Charlotte Tilbury beauty highlighter wand on cheeks to play with the beautiful twinkle lights on set, and Urban Decay glitter liner to subtly pop the eyes and catch attention. The lip was a bolder colour, but still had a beautiful glossy finish so it would still stay soft."
Grossman applied the Chanel Palette Les Beiges in 'Warm' ($121 at David Jones), Typology T20 Tinted Concealer Serum ($44 at Typology), Charlotte Tilbury Beautiful Skin Sun-Kissed Glow Bronzer in 'Medium' ($90 at Charlotte Tilbury) and the Charlotte Tilbury Beauty Light Wand in 'Pinkgasm' ($60 at Charlotte Tilbury) to create the beautiful tonal bronze look. The exact glitter liner used seems to be out of stock, but we'll be sure to let you know if we track it down.
Poppy's Tuscany Makeup In 'People We Meet On Vacation'
Poppy's Tuscany look was all about terracotta hues! “For our Tuscany scenes, I wanted to live completely in warm terracottas on the eyes, sun-kissed skin, and glowy cheeks and lips,” Grossman explained. “I wanted the eye shadows to be painterly blended swatches of colours, with no hard lines, especially since we see Poppy at one of her most vulnerable moments here."
“[As Costume Designer Colin Wilkes] had Poppy in such beautiful patterns and buttery colors, I wanted to play off that warmth. [Hair Department Head Tony Ward] did such beautiful updos, [so] we had great opportunities to showcase Emily’s amazing bone structure,” said Grossman.
“Lips were pillowy with a combination of liners and glossy tints,” Grossman explained, sharing that she used the specific lip combo of M.A.C Lip Pencil in ‘Whirl’ ($40 at Adore Beauty) and Hourglass Phantom Volumising Glossy Balm in ‘Slip’ ($66 at MECCA).
We suppose this lip combo is a bit like Poppy and Alex: better together.
