As brilliant and effective as makeup is, it’s a well-known fact that your base products will struggle to give you a flawless finish if you don’t have amazing skin underneath.

The same rule applies to everyone, even A-list celebrities like Kim Kardashian. While Kim is known first and foremost for her glamorous makeup looks, the main reason (besides having a team of top-notch makeup artists on speed dial) she looks that good is because she keeps her skin in good condition.

Luckily for us, Kim took to her app recently to share how she looks after her skin and shared some pointers on how important it is to have a routine that is centered around hydrating products and ingredients.

“Keeping skin moisturised is an essential part of any skin care regimen, and mine especially because of my psoriasis. I always start with hyaluronic acid, which releases moisture back into the skin,” she revealed.

And she’s not wrong. Hyaluronic acid is highly regarded as one of the most effective hydrating ingredients because the acid’s molecules are able to retain more than 1000 times their weight in water. This enables the skin to preserve and retain moisture from your skin care products, leaving your complexion hydrated and soft while also assisting in its ability to prevent a loss of firmness and plumpness.

In an addition to confessing her love for hyaluronic acid, Kim shared another aspect of her skin care routine that is a little unusual. In typical skin care routines, we apply products in order of the thinnest formula to thickest i.e. essences and serums are applied first, then a facial oil, followed by a rich moisturiser.

Kim however likes to do things a little differently. She applies her facial oil as the very last step in her routine. “Applying facial oil lasts acts as a barrier for the other moisturisers you applied. It seals all of the products so that they effectively hydrate the skin. Common facial oils are argan or jojoba, but there are so many that deliver great benefits, like preventing acne, repairing dryness and reducing signs of ageing such as wrinkles and puffiness,” she explained.

If you haven’t already jumped on the facial oil bandwagon, you’re seriously missing out! Just a couple that we love and recommend incorporating into your nightly skin care routine are Trilogy’s Certified Organic Rosehip Oil, The Jojoba Company 100% Natural Australian Jojoba and Estée Lauder Resilience Lift Restorative Radiance Oil.
