When it comes to picking the MVP within the eye makeup category, mascara tends to steal the spotlight over eyeshadows and eyeliners. You really can't go past this makeup essential if you're looking for an easy way to immediately look more 'done' and awake. Plus, mascara has the ability to glam up your look in just a few strokes.
The market is not short on best-selling mascaras - old faves such as Blinc Tube Mascara, Benefit Cosmetics BADgal BANG! Mascara, Maybelline New York Great Lash Mascara, Too Faced Better Than Sex Mascara and Lancome Hypnose Mascara immediately come to mind and are classics for good reason. However, this season, we're making way for new formulas that we just *know* are set to be best-sellers in the years to come. Here are some of our favourite mascaras this season.
If you have hooded eyes
A curling mascara, such as Rimmel London Scandaleyes WOW Wings Mascara, is the way to go for those with hooded eyes. The asymmetrical design of the wand makes it super easy to not only reach eyelashes from the root (and therefore give them a substantial boost), but it also creates a greater lift at the outer corners of your eyes, making them appear bigger.
If you have short lashes
Max Factor Rise & Shine Mascara is your ticket to longer lashes this season. The lengthening mascara features an hourglass-shaped wand that hugs every little eyelash with its non-clumping formula, even the little ones at your inner corners. Plus, the vitamin E-enriched formula ensures your lashes look luscious, rather than dry and brittle.
If you have straight lashes
Forget using a lash curler... you can’t go past a really good curling mascara, like L’Oréal Paris Bambi Eye Mascara, to lift your eyelashes from the roots and make your eyes look rounder. The secret lies within the design of this mascara wand; it features a blend of shorter bristles to curl your lashes, and longer bristles to boost volume in little hairs.
If you’re spending the day outdoors
If you’re the kind of person that’s likely to wear mascara to the beach, pool, or gym, make Urban Decay Perversion Waterproof Mascara your go-to. You’ll find a won't-budge, smudge-proof and super-dark formula that can be layered and layered to your heart’s desire. (Psst… the formula composition is also worth mentioning - it’s loaded with amino acids and honey extract to soften your lashes, and is paraben and cruelty-free). "I’m very picky with mascara so it takes a lot to impress me, but this is one of the best mascaras I've tried," says Briar Clark, Beauty Crew's Beauty Assistant. "The formula is not too wet and not too dry, so it really separates your lashes without getting clumpy. It can look natural with one layer, or you can add more coats for a glam look."
If you have sparse lashes
CHANEL Le Volume De CHANEL Mascara is a volume mascara that fuses together natural waxes to plump up fine hairs around your eyes and acacia gum to set the look. With two to three coats, your lashes will look big and bold, like you're wearing false lashes. For an even more dramatic result, layer this mascara on top of a lash primer. "While the short, stubby bristles don’t necessarily stand out, don’t underestimate what they can do," says Carli Alman, Beauty Crew's Editor. "Given they can easily reach right down to the root of your eyelashes, one swipe of this black mascara gives lift and curl, and the smudge-free formula adds instant volume. For everyday wear, one coat was plenty, and then two coats did the trick for a more impactful look."
If you have fair lashes
Whilst Dior Diorshow Pump 'N' Volume HD Mascara delivers impressive volumising benefits, we’re just as obsessed with its colour: the jet-black mascara can darken light-coloured eyelashes in a single stroke. While most mascaras are powered by the wand shape and formula, this Dior’s mascara also benefits from the tube itself. Squeeze the flexible tube packaging prior to taking the mascara wand out to soften the formula and prevent clumps from forming.
