Winter isn’t much of a fun time for our skin - it cops a beating, especially when we’re stepping outside in the chilly weather (not to mention, the icy winds that come with the season) and then trying to warm back up indoors with the heater on full blast. Due to these factors, our skin can become dull and red along with feeling itchy and looking flaky, which is never a good look. So, we’ve rounded up five of the most common winter skin concerns, plus tips on how to fix them. Easy.
If you have itchy skin
The wintery weather means that you’re more exposed to indoor heating and drier conditions outdoors, which may cause your eczema or super dry skin to itch and flake. A daily topical cream, such as Bioderma Atoderm Intensive Balm, can soothe your skin and reduce the urge to scratch, as well as strengthen your skin’s barrier and prevent moisture loss.
If you have dull skin
Something incredibly hydrating, such as Kiehl’s Calendula Serum-Infused Water Cream, can immediately plump up skin and make your complexion look seriously juicy and glowing. Psst… we love using this in the morning to smooth skin and prep our complexions for foundation.
If you have flaky skin
When it comes to removing flaky skin that’s sensitive due to the colder weather, go for a gentle exfoliating formula that won’t irritate your skin further, such as Elemis Superfood Blackcurrant Jelly Exfoliator. The jelly texture transforms into a soothing milk once it comes in contact with warm water, and it also contains little particles (it’s made with blackcurrant fruit pulp) that can physically - but delicately - buff away dead skin.
If your skin is red
If your skin is showing visible signs of redness or if you have rosacea, Clinique Redness Solutions Daily Relief Cream is a product worth trying. Besides containing lactobacillus extract, a type of probiotic that can improve the microbiome on your face, the formula itself is lightly tinted green to neutralise the redness.
If you have dry skin
To reverse the appearance of dry skin, slather Lanolips The Aussie Flyer Leave-on Recovery Mask onto your face and leave it for up to 10 minutes, then use a tissue to wipe away any excess. Key ingredients include lanolin, an occlusive ingredient that can prevent water loss, and glycerin to attract water into the skin.
