We know, we know: Just when you’re finally ready to dabble in 2019 hottest hair colour trends - copper, toasted coconut and coffee hair - a new buzz-worthy trend bursts onto the scene. Low-maintenance beauty girls rejoice because lived-in, effortless hair colours are here to stay. Case in point: 3D Balayage.

3D Balayage is a new take on a familiar colour technique whereby highlights and lowlights are painted onto strands.

Celebrity and associate colourist at Josh Wood Colour, Jason Hogan explains that 3D balayage involves lightly sweeping sections of hair with colour to create light and shade. The result? A brilliant, multi-dimensional mane that has natural-looking texture and movement.

"3D balayage is great because it takes traditional balayage and makes it more multi-tonal, instead of streaky or flat," says Shannon Lewis, colour specialist at Jo Hansford salon in London. "It’s very similar to hair contouring," Shannon continues. "Rather than dyeing the hair with one single lighter colour, there are two shades, and one is always slightly darker."

Here, a round-up of our favourite 3D Balayage hair colour ideas to take to your next hair appointment.
