We review our favourite red lipsticks
Your search for ‘The One’ starts here
Beauty Crew Contributing Editor / December 17 2018
Every season there’s a new lipstick colour that’s trending, but a red lipstick will always be a classic. While it’s no easy feat to find ‘The One’, once you do hunt down that perfect red that makes your skin tone glow and your confidence soar, you are loyal for life.
Your skin tone will generally guide you in the right direction for what shade of red is best for you, but we admit there’s no real way around knowing which one is a perfect match other than actually trying a bunch of shades on. Since we know your bank account may not allow for that, we asked our Beauty Crew team and SUPERcrew members to share their picks for the best red lipstick. Start your search with these highly-recommended red lipstick shades.
#10 / Antipodes Lipstick in Ruby Bay Rouge
The review: “I wear the Ruby Bay Rouge shade. Many red lipsticks don't suit me as I have a cool skin tone and blush easily (damn red cheeks!) so I was happy to find this! This lipstick range has shades for different skin tones and the colours are so rich and deep. There's a great mix of natural oils in these so they are beautifully smooth to apply and keep lips moisturised.” Milan, SUPERcrew member
#9 / Bourjois Rouge Edition Lipstick in 13 Rouge Jet Set
The review: “I buy way too many red lipsticks and lip stains, and this is one of my Holy Grail purchases! The colour is gorgeous and deeply pigmented, no need for multiple applications. It is very smooth and silky to apply, and doesn't dry out my lips or get flaky towards the end of the day. It's a slightly glossy, bright lipstick that has staying power!” Georgia, SUPERcrew member
#8 / CHANEL Rouge Coco Ultra Hydrating Lipstick in No. 444 Gabrielle
The review: “A stunning warm red that has all that iconic CHANEL style, as well as serious hydrating properties, thanks to the addition of three vegetable waxes − mimosa, jojoba and sunflower, to hydrate, nourish and care for the lips, whilst giving a feeling of comfort. The formula is more of a cream than matte texture, but wears quite well despite that fact (a good 3-4 hours of normal wear). And let's be honest...a double "C's" case doesn't hurt the style cred at all.” Jacqui, SUPERcrew member
#7 / Bourjois Rouge Edition Velvet Liquid Lipstick in Hot Pepper
The review: “Full disclosure: I’m not a lipstick person. For my everyday life, I would much rather slap on a lip balm and get on with my day rather than painstakingly apply and reapply a bright lipstick. However, there are a few occasions that simply call for a statement lip. In these instances, you can bet your bottom dollar that I only opt for the best of the best. And while I’ve tried a whole host of different lippies in the past, the one I always come back to is Bourjois Rouge Edition Velvet Liquid Lipstick in the shade Hot Pepper. The small doe-foot applicator makes application a breeze and the formula is both comfortable AND long-lasting – it’s practically the unicorn of the matte lipstick world. I can’t recommend this red velvet lippie highly enough!” Kate Niven, Beauty Crew’s Beauty Writer
#6 / Tom Ford Lip Colour in Dressed To Kill
The review: “I’ve tried over 100 lipstick formulas in my lifetime but this is one I keep coming back to. The reason why I’m obsessed with this lippie is because the formula can be easily smoothed on without catching on my skin, the shade is punchy and bright, and the clever packaging means that the lid clicks firmly into place (eliminating any chance that a lid might go rogue in my bag).” Iantha Yu, Beauty Crew’s Beauty Editor
#5 / NARS Lipstick in Jungle Red
The review: “I have blonde hair and medium to pale skin, although I tan really easily in summer so I prefer a true red lipstick that will look good on me no matter what season it is. NARS' Jungle Red is such a universally flattering red colour - it not only suits me, it’s one of those shades that looks equally good on Asian skin, fair skin, olive skin and dark skin tones. I love how nourishing this lippie feels once applied but that it still delivers a semi-matte finish for a sophisticated yet striking look. It’s one of those lipsticks that you’ll be hard-pressed to find someone who doesn’t love it.” Chelsea Tromans, Beauty Crew’s Contributing Editor
#4 / Charlotte Tilbury Matte Revolution Lipstick in Red Carpet Red
The review: “This little number is pretty much everything you’ve ever wanted in a lipstick. It’s comfortable and creamy (it doesn’t dry out your lips), is ultra long-lasting and has an amazing colour payoff. It’s my go-to lippie for a special event!” Erin Docherty, Beauty Crew Contributor
#3 / CHANEL Rouge Allure Velvet Extreme in 112 Ideal
The review: “This one hasn’t been around for very long, but has already taken top spot when it comes to a red lip look. I love how pigmented and bright the colour is (and it works beautifully with my medium, warm skin tone), and the texture feels light and comfortable. As for the wear, it lasts a good few hours (and through cups of tea and meals) before needing a top-up. Well worth the investment.” Carli Alman, Beauty Crew’s Editor
#2 / Revlon Super Lustrous Lipstick in Fire and Ice
The review: “A long-standing classic in my opinion and for good reason. The smooth, creamy, moisturising formula glides on easy and doesn’t dry my lips out. The pigmentation is fantastic with one coat being enough. It would flatter and brighten on a variety of skin tones.” Amanda, SUPERcrew member
#1 / MAC Lipstick in Ruby Woo
The reviews: “In my search for a true red lipstick that actually looks red on the lips and is not pinkish or plum coloured or even too orange, I only found one true classic - MAC in Ruby Woo.” Aneta, SUPERcrew member
“My favourite red lip colour is MAC Ruby Woo - it’s a standout matte red, you can dot it on the lips to give a soft wash of red or swipe it on for a bold red. It doesn’t move around much and lasts for ages thanks to its matte finish. Great red for Christmas Day.” Bree, SUPERcrew member
