Want to get an edgy new haircut, but don’t know what to go for? Look no further than the chic undercut look – it’s the hair trend that isn’t going anywhere, and it’s easy to see why A-listers such as Scarlett Johansson, Pink, Miley Cyrus, Halle Berry, Selena Gomez and Rihanna have chosen to rock this fresh crop.

As well as being utterly stylish, modern and cool, the popular cut is surprisingly versatile and has options to suit every hair type. Whether you have short hair, long hair, layered hair or curly hair, your perfect undercut style is out there.

What is an undercut?

If you’re a little bit hazy as to what we’re talking about, undercut hairstyles for women usually entail a portion of your hair being shaved off. A typical undercut style features shorter (shaved) lengths on the sides or back, with the hair on top kept longer. While it’s a little less dramatic than, say, dying your hair rainbow, it still offers quite an impact. It’s also easy to ‘hide’ by wearing your hair out if you’re worried an undercut isn’t work-appropriate or you want a softer look for the day.

Need some ideas? There are a whole range of different undercut designs for women, so we’ve pulled together some of the best looks straight from the celebs. From small and subtle to big and bold, we’ve got the perfect inspiration for you.

The hidden neck shave

If you want to try an undercut, but keep your length, Selena Gomez knows what’s going down. Last year she showed off some seriously long brunette extensions which were pulled back into a ponytail to reveal an edgy new undercut. It may be a subtle change, but it’s definitely bold. We think this striking shaved undercut, that sits low at the nape of the neck, adds a kick of drama to an otherwise classic braided ponytail.

The side-swept undercut

Miley Cyrus’ undercut is almost as iconic as *that* performance with Robin Thicke. While she’s been rocking different versions of the undercut for the past few years, this would have to be one of our faves. Showing off a short haircut with a deep side part and temple undercut, there’s just something so flattering about this type of style on Miley. It lets her enviable cheekbones take centre stage. An undercut on short or cropped hair instantly makes your hairstyle more prominent - so if you want to make a serious statement, copy Miley!

The temple undercut

Trust Rihanna to make an undercut look this elegant! This is another great option for long hair, albeit a little more obvious than Selena’s nape undercut. Similar to Miley’s version, Rihanna’s undercut also starts at the temple, however instead of opting for short hair, she’s kept the length. Her long bouncy curls are definitive proof that you can inject an edgy vibe into any hairstyle. The most glamourous take on the trend? We think so.

The pompadour undercut

Scarlett Johansson shows us how an undercut for women can still look soft and ultra-feminine with this popular shaved pompadour style (Pink is a MAJOR fan of this style, too). Combining her elegant pompadour with a sleek razored undercut proves the key to balancing out an edgy haircut is all in the styling. This is all the inspo you need if you’re working with a cropped pixie ‘do!
