Billie Eilish is no longer the only one who's 'Happier Than Ever'; we're about to smell just like her, so TBH we're pretty ecstatic as well. Yep, you guessed it, Eilish has announced the incredibly exciting launch of her first fragrance.
“Perfumes have been one of my greatest joys in life, and I’ve always wanted to make one,” Eilish revealed in an interview with Vogue, noting that this scent drop will be a little different to the 'celeb-names-plastered-across-scents-they-may-not-even-care-for-just-because-people-will-buy-it' type. In fact she has a genuine love for the craft of perfumery: “and not as Billie Eilish, not as an artist, not as a singer; I wanted to make a perfume to have a perfume," she explained. "It has nothing to do with me, I’m just branding it so that people see it."
So what does the scent smell like? "A deliciously gourmand “warm, caramel, smooth, velvety thing” according to Eilish. Um, delightful. “I’ve always been in love with vanilla, since I was a kid and my mum would teach me to bake – vanilla is such aloved smell,” she shared re: the central note. “But, for me, that was really how I felt like I wanted to smell, and just my favourite smell.”
But while the note of vanilla itself may not sound like anything revolutionary, Eilish was after a very specific version of it, and she didn’t rest ‘til it was found. “I went everywhere, I went to Macy's, I went to a perfumer, I went all over duty-free on tour, and I never found anything,” she said. “I literally ordered seven different vanilla perfumes off of Amazon, random brands, just to find the scent that I was raring for. And like, I made it…” she revealed.
For the bottle, Eilish was inspired by the human silhouette, but in a slightly contrasting way to other perfumers like Jean Paul Gaultier and of course, Kim Kardashian West, who both opted for full busts.
“I’ve always had an infatuation with back and collarbones and just like, bones and bodies, [but] I didn’t want to have it be a certain body type,” Eilish explained. “I think that the human body is so beautiful as it is, and we should stop changing all of our bodies and just be appreciative of what they naturally are because they’re so beautiful."
"I wanted it to feel like you could see anybody in it, and you could be it,” she shared. “I like the idea that you can see the person that you are in love with in it, somehow; I feel like it could match anybody, almost—or you.”
In pretty unsurprising news, the scent sold out within the same day it dropped, but you can sign up for restock updates at BillieEilishFragrances.com. And hey, while you wait, why not browse a few of Eilish's other favourite fragrances...
Eilish was indeed a major fragrance fan before she crafted her own. Instead of committing to a single scent, however, Eilish previously preferred to keep her perfume wardrobe varied and versatile.
Taking to Instagram Stories to share a snap of her lineup, the 19-year-old singer proved that her fragrance preference can change as quickly as her hair colour. Why box yourself in, right?
So, if you’re keen to shop her rotation, these are the perfumes (beside her own, of course) that Eilish calls her ‘favourites’…
Le Labo Another 13 EDP
Of course, Eilish (AKA the ultimate cool-girl) is a fan of the ultimate cool-girl cologne brand, Le Labo. This particular perfume is a clean, fresh (and yet still earthy) musk and moss mix with a woody twist and a subtle splash of pear. Bonus: it’s as genderless as it is chic.
Etat Libre D’Orange La Fin du Monde EDP Spray
Honestly, this one had us (and apparently Eilish too) at ‘base notes of popcorn’. It’s somehow sweet, spicy and salty all at once, with floral notes of freesia and iris, heady hints of cumin and pepper, and a little popcorn and sesame seed saltiness to round it out.
Dolce & Gabbana Velvet Wood EDP
A drop beloved for its true unisex nature, this captivatingly spicy concoction pulls its perfume from notes of ebony wood, earthy benzoin and smoky leather. It’s a rich and resinous blend particularly perfect for cooler weather, and while it’s not easy to get your hands on these days (it launched way back in 2011), it’s definitely worth the chase.
Nemat Perfumes Amber Perfume Oil Roll-On
Someone who tours as much as Eilish no doubt needs a solid carry-on-friendly cologne in her repertoire too. Her fave seems to be this subtle ‘skin but better’ style amber scent, ideal for applying when you want to smell good, but don’t want anyone to know you’re trying to smell good. It’s nice to know that even mega music moguls don’t turn their nose up at $23 bargain buys, either...
Etat Libre D’Orange She Was An Anomaly EDP Spray
Another spritz designed to offer a second skin effect, this flowery fragrance is the closest Eilish gets to ‘powdery’ perfume town. But while it’s steeped in white florals, the vanilla, musk and sandalwood centre (and the lick of peppery vetiver) keep it creamy enough to still come off cool.
Etat Libre D’Orange I Am Trash Les Fleurs Du Dechet EDP Spray
Eilish may not have a sole favourite fragrance, but it appears she does have a go-to brand, with three of her six signature scents hailing from Etat Libre D’Orange. Despite its quippy name, however, this specific scent smells anything but trashy, boasting a full-bodied blend of cedar, rose and sandalwood, sharpened ever so slightly by a burst of green apple. We must say, even though she’s since ditched the lime streaks, a fragment of something green still feels on-brand for Eilish...
