This derm has some “controversial” thoughts on hyaluronic acid
Turns out you may not need to spend a bomb to get results
Hands up if you’re familiar with that old saying, “You get what you pay for”? Yep, when it comes to many things, there’s often a view that the more you spend on something, the better it will be.
Well, Australian dermatologist Dr. Davin Lim seems to think that adage ain’t always true when comes to your skin care products.
Previously, Dr. Lim dropped a few truth bombs about budget moisturisers, and now he’s got some thoughts to share about hyaluronic acid creams and serums, too. We think you (and your wallets!) are going to like what he’s got to say.
“In my opinion, I would not waste a lot of money on [topical] HAs and I’ll tell you why,” Dr. Lim revealed in an Instagram video.
“HAs, in the cream or serum formulations, just sit under the top of your epidermis. Even with the best brands [of topical hyaluronic acid products], the results are only temporary - at the most, [the results last] 24 to 36 hours,” says Dr. Lim.
Why?
In a nutshell, this is because the body breaks down hyaluronic acids “that are delivered both by injection but also creams,” explains Dr. Lim.
“So in my view, why spend 200 bucks on a cream or serum when it degrades very quickly. I know it may be controversial, but I do believe that if you’re going to use HAs topically, go simple. Save your dosh for HAs which are delivered intradermally or into the hypodermis and that’s through injections.”
Wow! So it seems some of the budget hyaluronic acid products on the market may be just as good as the more boujee ones.
