No regrets, promise

We’ve all been there: staring at the beauty tool that promises the world but comes with a hefty price tag. A price tag that makes you question if said tool could actually be worth that dip in your bank account.
And while some may not be, there are definitely those out there that are 100 per cent worth the initial terror that sets in when you tap your card on the EFTPOS machine. When you factor in the technologies and materials used, cost per use, the years it’ll last you, and the professional treatments that could potentially be replaced, suddenly the cost is completely justified. And in the long run, you could find you’ve actually saved some money.
Here are our picks for the beauty tools you won’t regret shelling out your hard-earned dollars for.
Dyson Supersonic™ Hair Dryer, $499
If we had a dollar for every time someone gawked at the price of this premium tool, we’d have enough to pay for one. And then some. We get it, it sounds like a lot of money. But let’s take a deep dive into what you’re getting. Yes, the tool looks schmick thanks to its unique design, but the Dyson Supersonic™ is more than a pretty face. A lot of money, time and engineers were invested in creating a tool that not only feels lighter and works faster to dry your hair than some of its predecessors, but it makes sure it’s doing so at a safe temperature to protect your hair from extreme damage. And when you’re limiting the damage done to your hair, you’re giving it a better chance to look healthier and shinier, and feel softer. The hair dryer is pretty resilient, too; the tool was put under drop tests and was stood on during the creation phase to ensure it could withstand a lot.
If you’re someone who uses a hair dryer fairly regularly (say, two to three times a week) and are looking for a tool that’ll last you a good few years (minimum), this hair dryer is certainly worth the investment (it could end up costing you as little as $1 per use!).
Rae Morris Jishaku #26: Radiance, $160
As far as makeup brushes go, Rae Morris' Radiance brush one certainly sits at the higher end of the cost spectrum. But it’s hand-on-heart worth it. And not just because the brains behind it is the legendary makeup artist Rae Morris (who has used enough makeup brushes to know what makes an exceptional one). Hand-crafted by calligraphy experts in Japan, this super-soft goat hair brush helps blend in both powder and liquid foundations so well your complexion looks airbrushed – not a streak mark or patchiness in sight. And it’s multifunctional, so you can use it to blend in that cream contour or apply blush to the apples of your cheeks. If you make sure to wash it regularly with a gentle formulation, you can expect to use this one daily for years.
FOREO UFO, $395
Combining Korean sheet masks with warming and cooling sensations, light therapy and relaxing pulsations, this chic little device takes masking to a completely new level. And all you need is literally 90 seconds. The high-tech UFO uses the warming mode to infuse your chosen FOREO mask’s ingredients into your skin, while the cooling mode works hard to tackle puffiness and enlarged pores, leaving skin refreshed and invigorated. And let’s not gloss over the fact that the gentle pulsations feel like absolute heaven. You basically get three targeted photofacials in one device – a device that can be used an incredibly 40 times on one charge and comes with a TEN-year guarantee. Sorry, but you may have to say goodbye to your facialist.
Clarisonic Mia 2, $219
Why spend $200+ on a device that washes your face when your hands do the job just fine? Because the Clarisonic Mia 2 does a lot more than just clean at a surface level. The handy little tool (which is waterproof, by the way) uses a micro-massage motion to really get in deep when it comes to cleansing, so in the minute that you’re using it, it’s gently getting rid of the dirt, impurities and oil that could lead to enlarged pores, congestion and breakouts. And don’t forget – thoroughly cleansed skin is an excellent foundation to work with when it comes to the next steps and ingredients in your skin care routine. So, the better you can cleanse, the more you’ll get out of your serums, toners, treatments and moisturisers.
While you will have to change the brush head every three months, the tool itself is rechargeable and built to last, so you can breathe easy knowing the cost is stretching over a few years.
(And, PS, it's got a 5-star rating on our site, so you know it must be good!)
StylPro Makeup Brush Cleaner and Dryer, $99
We can’t tell you enough about how important it is to regularly clean your makeup brushes. Besides the fact that a dirty makeup brush isn’t actually applying your makeup product of choice as well as it could be, it’s harbouring a lot of bacteria from previous applications. And that’s bacteria that can contribute to unhealthy skin.
The quickest way to wash and dry your brushes? This innovative tool right here. Pop your makeup brush into one of the StylPro silicone collars, dip it into the water-and-cleanser formulation in the bowl, turn it on and watch the magic happen. Once the brush is clean, lift it out of the water (while the tool is still spinning) and let it dry. In about 30 seconds, you have washed and dried your brush, and it’s good to go for use again. Talk about efficient.
Philips Lumea Prestige IPL, $799
Despite its high price tag, if long-term hair removal is on your agenda, the Philips Lumea Prestige IPL may very well save you a lot of money in the long run given you can ditch those professional laser appointments. The at-home hair removal system has been developed in collaboration with dermatologists to work on a wide variety of skin tones to remove hair on your legs, arms, underarms, bikini line and face (there are four different attachments to target each). You basically have every nook and cranny of your body hair covered, should you so wish. In case you’re a bit sceptical of how well it actually works, the tool gets the tick of approval from users and they even offer a 90-day trial period with a money back guarantee.
