Gigi Hadid's grey lipstick is sparking a grunge-glam renaissance

It's the summer shade we never saw coming

Halloween has wrapped up and we’re onto Christmas, but according to Gigi Hadid (AKA the taste-making trendsetter of our generation), it’s not time to whip out your red lippy just yet.

Nope, the model is actually putting a far more unconventional hue on the map, having just stepped out with a statement grey lip. Yes, grey. Still edgy but not quite as stark as black lipstick, it's actually a pretty enticing option.

As for the inspo? Well, it was pretty simple. “She said I want a grey lip," her makeup artist Patrick Ta captioned the snap of the look.

But here's the wildest part: it actually looks good. And yes, it's Gigi Hadid so of course it looks good, but hear us out – the shade (which is generally reserved for corpse-bride costumes) has been done a little differently this time around and it's working wonders for its wearability.

How to pull off a grey lip

While grey is actually a lip colour that's fairly flattering across the skin tone board, the way it's worn is everything. For starters, you're going to want to follow Hadid's lead and add more warmth than usual to your face to offset the coolness of the colour. Think copper shadow, a generous wash of bronzer and a bit of a faux glow if your face is on the fairer side (especially compared to your body).

Hadid also proved that you don't need to leave eyes bare to pull it off. In fact, balance is key! A wing still works, but just maybe keep it on the softer side like she did, wearing the liner a little more 'smudged' than as a completely crisp cat eye.

And no, you don't need to head to a costume store to get your hands on a grey lippy. There are actually some chic shades on the mainstream market!

We’d assume that Hadid herself is wearing the Maybelline New York Vivid Matte Liquid Lipstick in Sinful Stone ($13.46 at Look Fantastic), but the Illamasqua Antimatter Lipstick in Storm ($21 at Look Fantastic) and the Revlon Ultra HD Matte Lip Color in Luster ($6.95 at Cosmetic Capital) are both winners too.

So if you're searching for an out-of-the-box summer lip shade, Hadid may have just gifted you the one you've been waiting for. Big beauty swings sometimes pay off, after all!
