The trick to getting rid of acne scars

The product duo working together to give you smoother skin

Acne is rather cruel. Not only does it leave you with red, sore spots on your face (and chest! and back!), but just when you finally kick it to the kerb, it leaves you with the worst type of farewell gift - scars.

One Reddit user knows all too well how confidence crushing both acne and the aftermath of this skin disease can be, posting this question to the online community:

“I'm not very good at makeup, but I'd really like to learn how to make my acne scars less visible. I'm always embarrassed in the sunlight or in bright lights.”

Never one to leave a fellow user hanging, a number of Reddit’s users came to the rescue with solutions to not only minimise the appearance of her acne scars during the day, but help heal them, too.

“I use acne.org's AHA+ every night… That smooths the skin over time and removes the dark spots,” one user revealed. “I’ve read that you can find products with this ingredient (glycolic acid) somewhere else for a lower price but this one works for me so I'll stick to it.”

Glycolic acid is a type of Alpha Hydroxy Acid (AHA), and is an excellent exfoliator. When applied topically, it removes dead skin cells, decongests the skin, and boosts cell renewal, helping to break down scars in the process.

Another user was quick to sing the praises of this AHA for helping her with her acne scars too.

“I like Makeup Artists Choice Gyluronic Acid Serum because it's hydrating, effective, and relatively affordable… The exfoliation will help make your scars less deep over time,” she shared.

And her second trick to help hide the scars during the day? Using a smoothing primer.

“Pick one with a lot of silicone in it and it will kind of fill in your pores and make your skin look more smooth. I like L'Oreal's Revitalift Miracle Blur.”

This winning combination of an exfoliating serum and a silicon-based primer means you’re treating the problem long-term while also providing an instant confidence-boosting solution. Genius!

Cherie is somewhat of a digital dinosaur, having kick-started her beauty writing career back in 2009 at PRIMPED alongside industry expert Zoë Foster Blake. Since then, her words have appeared online and on paper for BEAUTYcrew, POPSUGAR, beautyheaven, New Idea, and Fitness First, while her marketing know-how has helped brands such as L'Oréal Paris, The Body Shop, A’kin, and Dr. LeWinn’s add a journalistic flair to their digital content. She is a vocal advocate for (physical) sunscreen, is rather fond of a bold lip, and is utterly terrible at styling hair.
