4 easy ways to weatherproof your hair

Prepare your hair for unexpected changes in weather this spring

New Idea Contributor / November 03 2016

The chill of winter may be behind us, but cue unpredictable spring weather: rainy days, cold-to-hot temperature changes on a whim. It can take its toll on your tresses. Follow these easy ways to keep hair smooth and shiny at all times, and make sure your mane comes out on top, no matter what weather Mother Nature throws at it.

1

Stop any brittleness

The healthier the hair, the better it will hold up in the rain and wind. The easiest way to keep your strands in good condition is with hydration. Switch to a moisturising shampoo and conditioner, and use a rich treatment like Garnier Fructis Grow Strong Intensive Mask at least once a week.

2

Work with your hair, not against it

If it’s pouring outside and straightening your hair takes too much effort, now is not the time to fight it. Instead embrace your natural texture. If it’s curly, try pulling it into an on-trend messy updo, while straight-haired girls look great with a simple pony.

3

Stop hair going limp

If your hair tends to fall flat, try using a volumising spray before you blow-dry to help create body. Even if your hair is clean, you can blast roots with a dry shampoo like A’kin by Al’chemy Dry Shampoo to add texture.

4

Beat static frizz

Because dry hair is more prone to static frizz, a leave-in conditioning treatment or oil (we love L’Oréal Paris Extraordinary Oil Oil-In-Cream) can help strands stay smooth. Try styling products with silicone, which seal the hair cuticle so water can’t get inside. For fly-aways, spray hairspray onto a brush and smooth over the top of any naughty bits – it’s old-fashioned but it works.
