6 reasons to try this gold eyeshadow trend immediately
These celebs prove that every skin tone can pull it off

Intense. Rich. And oh so decadently gilded. Gold is having a serious moment. And it’s about as highly-pigmented and true-gold as it gets.
Usually when gold eye makeup is in, we’re singing the praises of a soft, white-gold shade that makes the whites of your eyes sparkle. But this on-trend update makes your eyes pop for another reason - because it’s bold and commands attention.
The Met Gala red carpet is when the gold eyeshadow trend first caught our eye. Selena Gomez, Gisele and Priyanka Chopra all made us take notice.
Then, a scroll through our Instagram feed later and we were inundated with inspiration. Kylie Jenner and Gigi Hadid, we’re looking at you.
While this bold, yellow-gold eye makeup look isn’t exactly going to make it into your everyday rotation, it’s just what you need for a special occasion (and yes, celebrating the end of the work week on a Friday night counts).
If you’re keen to bust out a golden eye, take inspiration from these stunning celebrity looks. Bonus: These diverse celeb looks prove that *this* eyeshadow colour is one that can work on any skin tone.
Selena was hard to miss on the Met Gala red carpet, rocking a sun-kissed tan, curly hair and that dazzling gold shimmer on her lids. For the colour intensity, she turned up the dial to maximum. But where she really nailed it (or should we say her makeup artist Hung Vanngo nailed it) was with the shape – a dramatic winged edge that gave her eyes a sultry almond shape, all finished off with a smudged black eyeliner. Divine!
Another Met Gala look created by celebrity makeup artist Hung Vanngo, Gisele went for a smoky, smudged finish, too, but in gold rather than black. We especially love how Vanngo extended the gold under her eyes. More angelic than Selena’s dark-and-mysterious vibe, Gisele’s flawless brows and full flutter of false lashes were the icing on the cake.
The third celeb to show off a gilded eye makeup look on the Met Gala red carpet was Priyanka Chopra. Rivalling the intensity of Selena’s eyeshadow, instead of playing down the rest of her makeup, Priyanka's makeup artist Pati Dubroff chose to highlight her dark features with a rich, berry lipstick and bold brows. This is how you turn heads in a crowded room.
More proof that black and gold are the perfect pair. On the Billboard Music Awards red carpet, Jenna Dewan did her gold eyeshadow a little differently, using it as an accent colour as opposed to it being the shining star. She opted for a glistening gold eyeshadow, which was neatly applied from the inner corners of her eyes, up and over the top of her thick, black graphic eyeliner. She then blended it into a sheer finish below her brow bone. Anyone with hooded eyes, take note.
The handiwork of makeup artist Erin Parsons, this is how Gigi Hadid celebrates turning 23. Parsons explained exactly how she created Gigi’s eye makeup on her Instagram:
“Using @maybelline Gold School Mono eyeshadow, apply wet over the lid and inner corner. Next apply gold glitter over a clear glitter glue where you put the eyeshadow. Dab on with the fingertip for full coverage gleam! Finally add one gold Hexagon pailette [sequin] to the inner corners for a blinding reflection!”
There is so much to love about this look. How glittery and intensely-gold the shade is, the smear of gold on the inner corners, and the feline flick to top it all off. And who needs lippie or any other products when your eye makeup is as on-point as this? Certainly not Gigi.
Side note: Sadly, the exact eyeshadow Gigi is wearing isn’t available here in Australia, but we think Maybelline’s Eyestudio Color Tattoo 24Hr Cream Gel Eye Shadow in Bold Gold is a very close match.
Just when we thought maybe gold eyeshadow didn’t have a place in our everyday makeup repertoire, Kylie Jenner came to the rescue. Swapping the glitter finish seen on the red carpets for a matte formula, Kylie’s look here is #makeupgoals. The natural base, nude lips, defined but not OTT lashes, and the restraint she showed when sweeping on a gold eyeshadow across the inner half of her lids only is exactly how it should be done if you’re going for a daytime look.
If colourful eye makeup is more your cup of tea, follow these pro makeup secrets for wearing more colour.
Are you crushing on this gold eyeshadow trend as much as we are? Whose look do you like best?
