Known for its detoxifying powers, charcoal fast became a staple ingredient in our skin care routines in the form of cleansers, face masks and scrubs. Now, charcoal has made its way into our haircare routines, and we're all for it. We're starting to see it in shampoos, conditioners and scalp treatments, and it looks like this hardworking ingredient is here to stay. "Charcoal helps to absorb deep-rooted impurities beyond what your standard shampoo can wash away," says hairstylist Michael Kelly of Edwards And Co. Here are the newest charcoal hair products to try.
Best for: in-between washes
This is one of the coolest hair products we’ve seen in a while. Redken Dry Shampoo Powder is a lightweight product that you sprinkle into your roots to keep greasiness at bay. We also like its volumising properties, which makes it a top choice for those with fine hair to keep on hand.
Best for: limp hair
Infused with activated charcoal to remove excess build-up of product, and micellar for a deeper clean, Pantene Charcoal Root Purifying Shampoo is a clear choice if you're looking for a charcoal hair product to add to your arsenal. We also like this product for its scent - discover notes such as water lily, mint leaves and amber to invigorate your senses.
Best for: damaged hair
Did you know that your hair can cop the side effects of pollution by looking dull and lifeless? The Davines The Purity Circle Mask is a hair treatment that brings together matcha tea (we love this ingredient for its antioxidant properties) and bamboo charcoal to revive damaged hair and improve hair resilience (which looks like bouncy, healthy-looking hair), and is perfect to use on all hair types.
Best for: travelling
You can't beat IGK Swipe Up Charcoal Dry Shampoo Hair Blotting Tissues if you're looking for a way to keep your hair clean without washing it constantly. We like these because they're infused with black charcoal powder, which can mop up excess oils on your scalp in a hurry.
Best for: normal hair
Loaded with activated charcoal sourced from coconut and kaolin clay, the OGX Purifying + Charcoal Detox Shampoo is a no-brainer if you're after locks that look uber shiny (who isn’t?!).
Best for: improving your scalp's health
The BRIOGEO Scalp Revival™ Charcoal + Tea Tree Scalp Treatment is a leave-in solution that features binchotan charcoal, peppermint, tea tree oil and witch hazel to address an unhealthy scalp. Massage one to two drops after washing and before blow-drying to reduce build-up of product, regulate oil flow and reduce itchiness. Psst... this product contains up to 98 per cent natural ingredients.
Take your obsession with charcoal to the next level with these skin care products.
