Known for its detoxifying powers, charcoal fast became a staple ingredient in our skin care routines in the form of cleansers, face masks and scrubs. Now, charcoal has made its way into our haircare routines, and we're all for it. We're starting to see it in shampoos, conditioners and scalp treatments, and it looks like this hardworking ingredient is here to stay. "Charcoal helps to absorb deep-rooted impurities beyond what your standard shampoo can wash away," says hairstylist Michael Kelly of Edwards And Co. Here are the newest charcoal hair products to try.

Best for: in-between washes

This is one of the coolest hair products we’ve seen in a while. Redken Dry Shampoo Powder is a lightweight product that you sprinkle into your roots to keep greasiness at bay. We also like its volumising properties, which makes it a top choice for those with fine hair to keep on hand.

Infused with activated charcoal to remove excess build-up of product, and micellar for a deeper clean, Pantene Charcoal Root Purifying Shampoo is a clear choice if you're looking for a charcoal hair product to add to your arsenal. We also like this product for its scent - discover notes such as water lily, mint leaves and amber to invigorate your senses.

Best for: fine hair

Not only is Matrix Biolage RAW Uplift Conditioner packed with natural ingredients (yep, up to 95 per cent) such as kiwi, kaolin clay and, of course, charcoal, it's also free from sulfates and parabens, which is ideal for those with sensitive scalps or allergies to surfactants.

Best for: damaged hair
