These will be the biggest hair trends of 2023, according to experts

Pinterest always has its finger on the pulse when it comes to predicting hair trends. After all, the platform knows exactly what kind of hair pics people are searching to take with them to the salon. And one of the top forecasts for 2023? Gemini hair. Why choose between the personalities of two hair colours when you can enjoy both? Multi-tone matches such as 'lavender and blonde hair' and 'brown to pink balayage' are surging in search with no signs of slowing down.

Brace yourself Gen Z: it's officially the era of the 'side' everything again. “Side parts are making a comeback, paired with feminine soft styling and lots of body and soft movement,” says Kirby Lago, Pelo By Lago Owner & Goldwell Colour Specialist. Cutting in a more permanent side-swept style is a good call, too, as confirmed by Karine Strachan, Stylist & Colourist at Tribe Lifestyle Salon Group: “Side fringes are making a return. Long curtain bangs and swept over side parts [will be big for 2023].”

The big bob trend for 2023? An homage to the coolest cut of the '70s. “The ‘70s bob is a big trend this summer – it focuses on having the front corners cut away which gives the bob a really cool edge,” says celebrity hair stylist and Larry King Haircare founder Larry King. “It reminds me of the look Mick Jagger wore in the ‘70s. It’s androgynous, playful, incredibly cool and definitely a different take on the bob than what’s been seen the past seasons.”

It seems 'cool' and 'creamy' aren't our blonde buzzwords for 2023. “We are creating more vibrant warm colours [in the blonde department],” says Lago, shouting out an 'Elle Macpherson honey blonde'. “We’re loving warmer, richer, natural looking colour for summer,” explains Jason Fassbender, Creative Director of  Willomina Salon & Goldwell Lead Stylist. “Think fine natural highlights and super soft blended balayage to mimic the summer sun's natural effect on hair.”

Got a shorter style? Try going more spiky, less slick. “From the recent fashion shows, you can see that ‘punk’ has come back,” confirms King. “I think punk is quite a rebellious movement and thinking of what the world has gone through recently, we’re seeing this come through [in rebellious hairstyles]. I think you’ll see spiky hair returning, giving it that grunge look." Said punk style is to be achieved more through styling techniques than cuts and colours, though: "Think of this in terms of texture: more ‘flicks’ as opposed to mohawks and crazy colours," King explains.

Warmth is in for brunettes, as well! “I've recently worked with Karlie Kloss and although it’s not a colour I’m responsible for I have to say it looks so great on her, and the solid, rich chestnut brown really looks amazing,” says King. A great way to spice up your deeper shade, especially during the warmer months!

Curls continue to thrive; just with a little extra length. “Embracing your natural hair texture [is still very in],” notes King. “I have always been very fond of curls, but this season I’m loving longer length curls; the ‘90s type we saw on Julia Roberts and Mariah Carey in the early days. I’m loving creating longer curls that are flipped at the front, movable and can be manipulated throughout the day.”

Spoiler alert: block colours (with major shine factor) will be big, especially for brondes and brunettes. “I’m really loving solid, vibrant colours at the moment,” explains King. “[Picture] solid, glossy colour that we're calling 'double glazed'. The solid finish gives it richness and depth. We're loving brunette tones in iced chocolate and double chocolate.”

Red's reign will blessedly run into 2023, however, sheerer, cooler tones are coming into focus, resulting in more pinky-red hues than orangey-red ones. “Colour washes in auburn and red tones [will continue to be big],” says King. “The wash lets highlights come through. We’re working on a lot of pinky copper reds that look absolutely beautiful and it’s a colour that more and more clients are turning to.”

Can't make the call between a bob and a pixie? Don't! “A slicked-back bixie (the bixie is the name for a bob & pixie cut combo) [will be huge],” says Piet Pantano, Co-Owner of Wildlife Hair Sogo & KMS Lead Stylist. "We’re seeing more definition to the baseline [in cuts like these] so there’s shape around the front to highlight certain features and areas," King adds, emphasising the need for sharp, chic 'bixie' ends that provide the perfect 'flare'.

Bounce is back, baby! “We’re moving away from effortless and textured waves and seeing more bouncy blow-dries," says Di Jones, Owner of The Mane Space, Manly. The vibe? "Polished looks that have an emphasis on shine. Think Rachel and Monica from Friends," Jones confirms. "Healthy and bouncy hair never goes out of fashion," echoes King. Constant chops are the key to keeping your flouncy look fresh, though. "Ensure you get that regular trim so that ends are maintained,” he adds.

Can you keep your claw clips? Absolutely. Though calling them 'clamp clips' as King does definitely lends them a new cool-factor. “As far as accessory trends are concerned, I think we’ll keep seeing giant clamps that give you that 90’s vibe," he shares. "They give you almost a French pleat on the back. Just clamp your hair in and pull out the front sections for a modern take.”
