The argan oil shampoos that are seriously hydrating
There are so many things your hair will love about them
Beauty Crew Contributing Editor / June 05 2019
Argan oil has quite the reputation in hair circles. As far as hair-nourishing ingredients go, argan oil is heralded as one of the best. It’s no wonder entire haircare brands have been based around the golden elixir - Argan Magic, Argan Life Australia and cult-favourite Moroccanoil for starters (did you know that argan oil comes from the kernel fruits of argan trees in Morocco?).
How is argan oil good for hair?
Let us count the ways! A high source of antioxidants, essential fatty acids and vitamin E, argan oil is the secret to stronger, healthier, more hydrated and shinier hair. Argan oil is actually made up of 99 per cent essential fatty acids (also known as triglycerides), which help to lock moisture into the hair follicle to restore dry, damaged hair, as well as soothe skin inflammation - i.e. it can calm an irritated scalp and help promote healthy hair growth (psst, find out more about scalp health and hair loss over here). Argan oil also helps increase hair elasticity, protects against UV damage, and neutralises free radicals.
While argan oil makes an exceptional hair treatment, it’s also the type of ingredient your hair and scalp will love in a shampoo. Shampoo is notorious for being drying and stripping away natural oils, but argan oil helps ensure this doesn’t happen.
SO, What is the best argan oil shampoo? Well, these are the ones that we rate. Go ahead and add them to your bathroom, stat. Your hair will especially thank you for it now that we’re coming into winter and dryness is one of the top hair woes of the season!
#4 / OGX Renewing Moroccan Argan Oil Shampoo
This argan oil shampoo is sulfate-free and paraben-free, but bursting with hair-loving argan oil to restore your hair back to silky and strong. It will also help protect your strands from heat styling.
The review: “My hair repair secret to less split ends and gaining longer hair. The OGX Argan Oil of Morocco Shampoo contains silk proteins that appear to lock in moisture so my hair doesn't get nearly as dry as it used to. Creamy, lush and super hydrating, this is a fabulous shampoo for my colour-treated hair that now doesn't fade as fast. My hair is so much easier to brush through when using it and the smell of the shampoo and conditioner is gorgeous. The bottle is great looking and quite large, so it lasts for many washes.” Rebecca, SUPERcrew member
#3 / Oribe Gold Lust Repair & Restore Shampoo
Backed up by other nourishing oils (cypress and maracuja), this shampoo is a luxurious treat for hair (at $69 per bottle, it doesn’t come cheap, but it is worth the splurge). If you’ve struggled to get your hair to look and feel nice for ages, this repairing formula will bring it back to life.
The review: “My hair is quite fragile from previous years of highlights so I’m very careful to only use haircare that I know will be gentle and nourishing on my damaged hair. This gorgeous pale gold shampoo feels really indulgent to use and contains argan, cypress and maracuja oils to lavish your hair with moisture and strengthen delicate strands. It leaves my hair feeling so soft that when I first started using it, I thought I’d accidentally reached for the conditioner first rather than the shampoo! For bonus points, the glossy black bottle looks incredibly elegant sitting on your shower shelf.” Isobel Larkin, Beauty Crew’s Junior Beauty Writer
#2 / Moroccanoil Moisture Repair Shampoo
Not just a one-product wonder brand (although their Moroccanoil Treatment is among the best in the biz), Moroccanoil's shampoo is a must-have for healthy hair. All hair types will love this shampoo, especially dry hair and curly hair. It repairs and intensely hydrates, as well as gently yet effectively cleans hair. It’s also colour-safe, sulphate-free, phosphate-free and paraben-free.
The reviews: “This one is amazing for dry, damaged hair! Leaves my hair feeling so incredibly soft, smoothed and the mild nutty scent is just heavenly and lingers in hair long after it has dried. The turquoise bottle is also beautiful and looks so pretty on my bathroom shelf, which is always a nice bonus.” Mandy, SUPERcrew member
“It has to be the iconic Moroccanoil Shampoo. It cleans beautifully, leaves hair amazingly soft and silky AND a bottle lasts for ages. It also leaves your hair in better condition than when you started....a real plus for a shampoo. Oh, and the whole family can use it (even the man in your life will love the delicate, earthy fragrance).” Jacqui, SUPERcrew member
#1 / Essano Argan Oil Nourishing Shampoo
Formulated with 93.6 per cent natural ingredients, including 10 per cent from organic farming (and the bottle is made from 100 per cent pre-used, recycled material that’s also still recyclable), this drugstore shampoo delivers pretty impressive salon-quality results. Argan oil has been teamed up with macadamia oil, pomegranate oil, aloe vera and plant proteins to douse hair with a whole lot of hydration, damage-repairing perks and beautiful shine. What’s not to like?! It's also sulphate-free and safe for coloured hair.
The reviews: “I blow-dry and straighten the absolute life out of my hair, so it’s often left looking a little dull and unhealthy. My new go-to is Essano Argan Oil Nourishing Shampoo – it helps repair and nourish my damaged strands, making my hair look shiny and suuuper soft after just one wash. Plus, it leaves my hair smelling *amazing*.” Erin Docherty, Beauty Crew’s Beauty Writer
“Besides the fact that I love how soft and silky this shampoo leaves my hair, I’m even happier with all the stuff that’s *not* in the bottle and the fact that it’s not tested on animals. Also, there’s no getting past how good the price is. An absolute winner if your dry hair needs a little extra TLC (but your bank balance isn’t looking so good).” Carli Alman, Beauty Crew’s Editor
