Kylie Jenner has become the celebrity known for mixing up her hair game by donning wigs in all different cuts, styles and colours. However, the sneaky temporary hair transformation trend is becoming a lot more common these days, with the likes of Shay Mitchell, Kim Kardashian, Gigi Hadid, Katy Perry and Lady Gaga all jumping on the faux-hair bandwagon. Click through our gallery to check out the top 10 times we were fooled by celebs mixing up their ‘do.
Home and Away star, Pia Miller is known for her long and luscious locks, however she’s temporarily swapped them out for a faux caramel toned lob. Pia’s short-lived new ‘do is actually for an incredibly good cause. The actress has teamed up with ghd for their latest #myhaircares campaign.
The campaign is in association with the National Breast Cancer Foundation and Breast Cancer Foundation NZ, and works to empower women to embrace their hair whether it’s their own, or it’s a wig they’re wearing during the stages of cancer.
We love Pia’s temporary look almost as much as we love ghd’s worthy cause!
Gigi Hadid is giving Kylie Jenner a run for her wig-wearing money in her latest campaign for Stuart Weitzman. In the shot, the model has temporarily swapped her signature long waves for a highlighted pixie cut. And while we know Gigi’s new ‘do is faux, we certainly wouldn’t be mad if she had decided to permanently commit to the short hair look.

Following on from her dramatic pink colour change (which also turned out to be the work of an expertly-placed wig), the model’s super-short chop was captioned “Happy april foolz fwends ;)”. You almost had us, Gigi!
Although Salma Hayek’s current style is similar to Bella Hadid’s lob, she took a temporary break from it, sporting this pastel pink colour on the Cannes red carpet.
When we saw Gigi Hadid sporting this pink and orange ‘do over the weekend, we were momentarily overcome with excitement, thinking the model had ditched her signature bronde waves. But it turns out the new look is actually thanks to a wig, although it has definitely made us hope that a dramatic hair change is on the cards for the model.
Recently celebrity hairstylist, Chris Appleton shared this snap of the Pretty Little Liars actress sporting a razor-sharp asymmetrical lob, which caused a wild debate in our office as to whether or not Shay MItchell’s new ‘do was real or not. It turns out the new look was only temporary as Shay told Refinery29 journalist, Lexy Lebsack “I’ve gotten really into wigs lately…I’m not necessarily going to cut my hair, or dye it to look like this, but i’ll play around with a wig and wear it for a few hours.” If that’s the case, then we can’t wait to see what look Shay dabbles with next!
Kylie trolled us all recently when she took to her Snapchat to reveal a chic bob that was in the midst of being cut. Whilst we were sure the new ‘do was real at the time, we’ve come to learn that any Kylie Jenner hair transformation is only temporary.
Keeping the wig wearing trend in the family, Kim Kardashian recently debuted what we thought was a new asymmetrical lob. It turns out that the new ‘do was just a wig, with Kim saying that she loves to constantly change up her style as it “makes me feel creative and it helps me with my confidence.”
Shay Mitchell is another celeb who’s fooled us recently, sharing a snap of a textured lob on her Instagram recently. Her hairstylist Chris Appleton revealed a day later that Shay simply wanted to try out the new look without the commitment.
At the 2015 American Music Awards Gigi shocked us all when she rocked a shorter, slicked back bob hairstyle, which was a dramatic change to her signature long, flowing waves. Turns out the bob was a partial wig placed at the back of her head with her natural hair pulled back behind it.
Zendaya is now a well-known lover of wigs, however she managed to fool us at the 2015 Grammy Awards with this sharp pixie cut. The 19-year-old explained that she “had to feel it out” and “try it on for size.”
Whilst we wouldn’t be surprised if Lady Gaga wore a wig as a part of one of her unusual and quirky hair and makeup looks, we were fooled when she stunned at the 2015 Grammy’s with her long, ashy blonde wig.
While we know the singer is lover of wigs, her hairdos usually range from bright blue to pink and everything in between, so when she showed up with this dark brown pixie at the 2015 Met Gala, we thought it was the real deal.
When you think of a celebrity who would opt to don a wig, Katie Holmes probably doesn’t come to mind. However, the actress sported a sleek bob style (a look reminiscent of her 2008 hairstyle) on the red carpet of the 2015 Met Gala, and later revealed her long locks were simply hiding underneath.
Back in 2010, wearing a wig on the red carpet wasn’t as common practice as it is now, which is why we were surprised to find out that the Rihanna’s bright red curly ‘do was, you guessed it, a wig.
