One product category that has exploded in recent years is natural perfumes without chemicals. No longer are organic perfumes considered a niche product reserved for the likes of modern-day hippies. Instead, a number of blends that are every bit as complex and refined as your favourite synthetic alternatives continue to be released. But why have natural fragrances become so popular? More and more people are choosing to reduce the number of synthetic chemicals present in their beauty products – namely parabens, phthalates, allergens and synthetic alcohols – and organic perfumes fit the bill. Typically formulated with a pure blend of essential oils, the best natural perfumes not only smell delightful, but they’ve also been known to relieve tension, boost your mood and improve your sleeping habits.
If you’re already a natural and organic perfume addict looking for a new spritz, or are looking to give a natural fragrance a go, these are the best organic perfumes and natural formulas that have stolen our hearts (and noses).
#10 / LUSH Imogen Rose
Long heralded as one of the best natural beauty brands, LUSH sure knows how to create delicious fragrances free from any known nasties. The delicate blend of rose, amber and vetiver combine in this scent for a modern take on the classic rose fragrance.
The review: “This perfume is perfect for when you’re in a super girly mood. It is, as the name suggests, a rose fragrance, however it also smells surprisingly earthy and modern with a hint of powder. Because it’s quite a strong fragrance, I normally reserve it for a night out – it goes the distance and will last you a solid few hours. It also comes in a handy solid perfume form and the tin is perfect for throwing in your gym bag.” Isobel Larkin, Beauty Crew’s Beauty Assistant
#9 / Venustus Mr & Mrs Organic Water Perfume Roll On
If you’re after an organic perfume brand that caters to both men and women, look to this fragrance set from Venustus. The two organic roll-on perfumes feature a subtle blend of natural fragrance oils, perfect for couples that want to enhance their au naturel scents.
The review: “This perfume duo is the perfect his and hers gift for the couple that has everything. While the two formulas have been designed to complement each other, I love using both, especially during the warmer summer months. Mr is a sultry cocktail of vanilla and sandalwood, while Mrs features a zingy combination of lime and spearmint.” Kate Niven, Beauty Crew’s Beauty Writer
#8 / KORA Organics Heart Chakra Aromatherapy Oil
Packed full of nourishing oils, this potent blend of rose otto, sandalwood, ylang ylang and cedarwood encourages relaxation and mindfulness. The handy rollerball also makes on-the-go application or mid-afternoon touch-ups a breeze.
The review: “I absolutely love using this before bed at night. The soothing blend of organic rose and sandalwood immediately calms me and helps me get a great night’s sleep. Plus, the beautiful pink rollerball bottle is so pretty and tiny so I can just put it in my bag and take it anywhere I go.” Mandy, SUPERcrew member
#7 / IME Natural Perfumes Ourania (Intuitive)
The delicate array of florals and woods in this natural botanical perfume evolves with your skin, changing over time to bring out the subtle qualities of your own personal scent. What results is a truly unique fragrance that’s sure to score you compliments.
The review: “My favourite from the line is Ourania (Intuitive). It is a very unique scent; floral, subtly sweet, but with a peek of freshness (spearmint) and base of balsams and vanilla.” Jovanka, SUPERcrew member
#6 / Kai Rose Perfume Oil
Transport yourself to the English countryside with this perfume oil composed with a blend of essential oils. Gardenia, jasmine, lily, tuberose and rose absolute create an ultra-feminine and soft scent, perfect for any occasion.
The review: “I’m not usually a huge fan of rose fragrances, but there’s something about this one that I instantly fell in love with. It has a handy rollerball, so application is a breeze, but be warned: it can be a little too easy to apply too much, so exercise caution.” Carli Alman, Beauty Crew’s Editor
#5 / Vanessa Megan Essential Blend Natural Perfume
If you’re a lover of calming and relaxing fragrances, then Vanessa Megan’s Essential Blend Natural Perfume might be what your olfactory wardrobe is missing. Featuring a blend of ylang ylang, patchouli, lavender and geranium essential oils, the 100 per cent natural perfume has been known to calm and relax both the mind and body.
The review: "I just love this natural perfume. No headaches or blocked sinuses and the subtle musky smell is an instant mood shifter. I always feel calmer, happier and more balanced when I wear it." Adriana Donnola, WHO and New Idea’s Executive Beauty Editor
#4 / LUSH Dirty
This multi-layered perfume promises to refresh the senses and invigorate the mind. The cooling scent, which features notes of spearmint, tarragon, thyme, sandalwood and lavender, will hit you like a breath of fresh air each time you spritz.
The review: “This natural perfume oil is seriously potent, so be warned. I love the muddle of refreshing notes like spearmint and thyme that’s anchored by sandalwood to ensure that the scent lasts all day long.” Iantha Yu, Beauty Crew’s Beauty Editor
#3 / LaVanila Perfume ‘The Healthy Fragrance’ – Pure Vanilla
There’s a very good reason why vanilla is found in so many perfumes: it’s universally loved and blends seamlessly with a variety of different notes. If all your synthetic fragrances feature vanilla and you’re looking for a natural alternative, look to LaVanila’s ‘The Healthy Fragrance’ – the sensual perfume combines a delicious blend of Madagascan vanilla, tonka bean, chamomile and olive leaf extract.
The review: “I have never loved any other perfume this much, natural or otherwise! A lot of perfumes can give me headaches, but this is a heavenly scent that isn’t too strong. I apply two sprays in the morning and it lasts all day.” April, Adore Beauty reviewer
#2 / Child Perfume by Susan D. Owens
This intoxicating fragrance is notoriously hard to track down, which may be why it’s reached cult status. The elusive scent features a floral blend with a convenient roll-on applicator that’s as popular now as the day it launched in 1989.
The review: “My favourite chemical-free perfume would have to be one from the US that is all but impossible to find anywhere. It is called Child Perfume by Susan D. Owens and it is a beautiful, handmade natural fragrance that smells like summer in a bottle (vanilla, jasmine, magnolia with hints of lilac, rose and violet, but I also get a lot of gardenia from it). It is exceptionally beautiful. It lasts for hours and whilst it is expensive, it is a beautiful scent that will become a signature for you.” Jacqui, SUPERcrew member
#1 / Ayu Souq
While those who favour lighter, more delicate fragrances may not love this rich scent, it’s perfect for those looking to try something a little different. Notes of rose, jasmine, musk and sandalwood combine to create a luxurious fragrance, while jojoba deeply moisturises the skin and helps to retain the scent over time.
The review: “Because this is a perfume oil made from natural flower and plant extracts and organic essential oils, the scent is pretty concentrated, so you literally only need one drop for both wrists and neck. While those who love sweet and floral scents may not be into Souq, I love how woody and heady it is. Perfect for winter or nighttime.” Carli Alman, Beauty Crew’s Editor
