We’ve found 7 natural deodorants that *actually* work
If you want to go aluminium-free, we recommend these
Beauty Crew Contributing Editor / April 10 2019
You don’t need to be a natural beauty convert to see the appeal of a natural deodorant. While the research is not conclusive, there have been some concerns raised over the use of aluminium in antiperspirant deodorants (find out why aluminium antiperspirants have such a bad rap - and what the experts have to say about them). Or maybe you’re just not into the idea of antiperspirants blocking your body from doing something it’s naturally designed to do - i.e. sweat to regulate your body’s temperature. While natural deodorants work slightly differently - they absorb moisture and mask body odour rather than actually preventing your body from sweating like antiperspirants do - they are free from aluminium and, of course, there’s the fact that their formulas are all natural and free from nasties.
The problem is, in the past natural deodorants have failed to impress. Their effectiveness was very hit or miss, and their smells often unpleasant and overpowering. But, if you’ve tried them before and vowed to never again, you may want to reconsider. Because natural deodorants have come a long way, and there are ones out there that work an absolute treat. We happen to have found seven of them for you. These are the ones we consider to be some of the best natural deodorant options available here in Australia.
GOOD TO KNOW: It’s important to note that when you start using a natural deodorant, you need to give it a chance. For some people, their bodies go through an initial detox period to remove the toxin build-up caused by your antiperspirant, which can make your natural deodorant seem like it’s not working. After the detox period is over (up to two weeks), you’ll be able to reap the full rewards of your natural formula.
#7 / Kopari Coconut Oil Deodorant
Vegan, cruelty-free and free from baking soda (which can irritate some skin types), this coconut oil-enriched natural deodorant contains a 100 per cent plant-based active that takes care of providing your underarm area with odour protection. It goes on clear plus it smells like fresh coconut milk!
The review: “I’m not usually one to opt for a natural deodorant, but I had heard that the category has come a long way since the boom of natural beauty products. I love that this comes in an easy-to-use stick form (as opposed to a paste, which used to be the more common form for natural deodorants), and the smell is really lovely. So far I’ve only tested it on day-to-day use and it’s ticking the boxes. Next step is for a full-on sweaty workout at the gym!” Carli Alman, Beauty Crew’s Editor
#6 / KIND-LY 100% Natural Deodorant
An all-natural Australian brand, KIND-LY tackles body odour by fighting the bad bacteria in your underarms with good bacteria. Probiotics and magnesium in their formulas work to create a happy microbiome to keep any bad smells at bay. KIND-LY’s roll-on natural deodorants contain pure essential oils in five scent variants to leave you smelling fresh throughout the day. If you’re looking for a natural deodorant for your kids, we reckon they’ll love these as much as you will - both for their clean but colourful packaging and the variety of girl and boy-approved scents.
The review: “I have very sensitive skin so finding a deodorant that doesn't irritate me or cause any itch has been a long process of trial and error. The best I have found is KIND-LY. It is a 100 per cent natural deodorant that’s vegan, cruelty-free and Australian made. It is a roll-on formula which is soft and nourishing and comes in a small variety of pleasant essential oil scents. My favourite is Cyprus & Sandalwood. I really feel it keeps me protected and eliminates odour for the entire day. While it is slightly on the expensive side, the comfort and protection is well worth the investment.” Amanda G, SUPERcrew member
#5 / Sukin Natural Deodorant
This deodorant spray is formulated with zinc to control bacteria growth; aloe vera, burdock and nettle extract to soothe skin; and a blend of citrus, lavender and vanillin oils for an invigorating scent that will leave your underarms fresh for the rest of the day. It’s suitable for all skin types and we love the fact that it’s Australian made.
The review: “No aluminium and no parabens, plus a great spray bottle! Smells beautiful with natural essential oils and feels light and breathable on skin.” Milan, SUPERcrew member
#4 / Tarte Clean Queen Vegan Deodorant
This twist-up stick deodorant has a cream-to-powder formula that doesn’t leave behind any white residue or wetness, and is gentle on sensitive skin. Inside this natural formula you’ll find plant starches, which work to fight odour, and aloe to soothe and condition skin. Plus, no alcohol. We especially adore the cute packaging and its sweet vanilla scent.
The review: “The best natural deodorant that works is Tarte Clean Queen Vegan Deodorant. It not only performs even when working out, but is hypoallergenic and contains no aluminium and it smells great, too.” Aneta, SUPERcrew member
#3 / LaVanila Deodorant
Available in six scents (all of which hero vanilla in some way), this clinically-tested and dermatologist recommended deodorant is fast-drying and doesn’t leave behind any white residue. It’s also free from parabens, aluminium and bi-carb. The ingredients - which include soothing aloe and antibacterial tea tree oil - are vegan, cruelty-free and ethically and sustainably harvested, plus the packaging is recyclable.
The review: “My favourite natural deodorant is LaVanila. I have tried so many, but this one keeps coming out on top for me as I find the formula hydrating and non-irritating, plus it smells really beautiful and feminine.” Lucrecia, SUPERcrew member
#2 / Mukti Organics Botanique Deodorant
A certified organic deodorant, Mukti is another Australian skin care brand that takes our skin health very seriously, leaving nasties out of their formulas, including no aluminium in this deodorant. Instead, you’ll find witch hazel, which can help reduce unwanted bacteria growth, and a herbaceous blend of pure essential oils for a refreshing scent that lasts all day. We particularly like this one for women and men.
The review: “After researching natural deodorants for a story, I can’t bring myself to use anything with aluminium anymore…I have tried many natural alternatives and unfortunately there aren’t many that have staying power. I’m a big fan of this Mukti one, which relies on essential oils and botanical ingredients to help fight odour, sans nasties.” Toni Hynes, Who and New Idea’s Beauty Editor
#1 / A’kin Geranium and Cedarwood Natural Deodorant
This Australian skin care brand has created two natural deodorants, one in a spray form and the other in a roll-on. Both are scented with an invigorating blend of geranium, cedarwood and patchouli oils that provide odour-neutralising protection, and don’t contain any bi-carb soda, zinc, triclosan or aluminium.
The reviews: “I had about given up on my search for a good natural deodorant when I received this in a Priceline goody bag. The smell stuck out straight away - smelt a lot like MOR Marshmallow - absolutely gorgeous. It actually hides odour very effectively and is quite long-lasting. Best of all, it is an absolute bargain at under $10!” Mandy, SUPERcrew member
“While the combo of geranium and cedarwood notes do make this roll-on deodorant a lot more fragrant than I’m used to for a deo (think of how an essential oil smells, and this is it), the scent seemed to settle and fade fairly quickly so it didn’t interfere with my perfume. As far as odour protection, it did a really good job. Granted I’m not typically someone who gets overly smelly, but I wore it on some sweltering days walking to and from train stations and even though I was quite sweaty (TMI?), there was no smell. Priced just over $10, it’s definitely one worth trying if you’re looking to go natural with your deodorant.” Carli Alman, Beauty Crew’s Editor
Cost: $9.95 (150mL spray); $10.95 (65mL roll-on)
