These are our favourite purple shampoos right now
The toning formulas that get our tick of approval
Beauty Crew Contributing Editor / December 31 2018
No doubt you’ve seen purple shampoos around, but if you’re still wondering ‘what does purple shampoo do?’ and ‘do I actually need one?’, then allow us to fill you in, because it might just be what your coloured hair desperately needs.
For most coloured blonde hair, a purple shampoo is a non-negotiable. It’s how you keep your bottled blonde shade bright and free from brassiness in between hair appointments (hint: it can even help you stretch out how often you need to get your hair coloured). The way it works is much like colour correcting concealers. Yellow and purple are on opposite sides of the colour wheel, so the way to neutralise any yellow tones in blonde hair is with a purple toning shampoo.
How to use purple shampoo
The way to actually apply a purple shampoo is the same as your regular shampoo. Wet, lather, rinse. But this is a shampoo you only need to use once a week, or even fortnightly depending on how your colour is looking. It’s also important to never leave a purple shampoo in your hair for more than five minutes as it may stain the hair. Also, wait at least two weeks after your hair colour appointment before using one.
Ready to add one to your haircare routine? We’ve pulled together our favourite formulas and shared our reviews for each.
#9 / Fanola No Yellow Shampoo
This cruelty-free purple shampoo is richly pigmented, and recommended for use on blondes with hair colour levels 9 and 10 for optimum results (read: light blonde shades). Expect it to do exactly what the name says - keep yellow tones from ruining your beautiful blonde colour.
The review: “I know a thing or two about purple toned shampoos...after all, my pearl blonde hair relies on it to keep it that clean, white that I love, and not that ‘rust’ hue that creeps up at times. So to avoid that, I recently got a hold of one by the brand Fanola...the ‘No Yellow’ shampoo. It is magic for grey, super-lightened or ash blonde coloured hair, and it actually leaves your hair soft to touch (a side effect I have found with other violet shampoos, that is not always the case). The violet pigment truly does tone down any unwanted yellow or gold, leaving your hair a beautiful, clean blonde or grey, as well as soft, shiny and cared for.” Jacqui, SUPERcrew member
#8 / De Lorenzo Novafusion Silver Shampoo
Don’t let the ‘silver’ name fool you, this is still a purple shampoo - it’s just better suited to cool, ashy shades. Oh, and this particular one has sparkles in it to increase your colour’s luminosity. Thanks to UV inhibitors, this shampoo protects hair from colour fade caused by sun damage (a common culprit of lacklustre strands in Australia), as well as neutralising unwanted brassy or yellow tones. It’s great for grey hair, white hair and blonde hair, and is scented with lavender rose tea.
The review: “The best purple shampoo to keep hair icy blonde is De Lorenzo Novafusion Silver Shampoo. It is powerful enough to knock out any brassiness that you may have in your hair.” Aneta, SUPERcrew member
#7 / Schwarzkopf BC Bonacure pH 4.5 Color Freeze Micellar Sulfate-Free Shampoo
This shampoo has a blue-violet colour and works to restore cool tones in blonde coloured hair. It also rebalances your hair’s pH to 4.5, which will help your colour last longer while also protecting it from damage.
The review: “I am trialling Schwarzkopf BC Bonacure pH 4.5 Color Freeze Micellar Sulfate-Free Shampoo at the moment and love the clean and bright blonde this violet formulation is giving me. My hair looks as good today as when I first had it coloured two weeks ago.” Sally Hunwick, marie claire’s Beauty Director
#6 / Matrix Total Results Color Obsessed So Silver Shampoo
Blonde and grey hair will reap the rewards of this toning shampoo. It cleans hair of dirt and product build-up, restores shine and neutralises unwanted brassiness for softer, more luminous tresses.
The review: “This shampoo was recommended to me by my hairdresser when I first went blonde (from natural black) and I wish I had known about it sooner. It got rid of the brassiness and the shampoo lathered up well, unlike other toning shampoos. My hair didn't feel dry or brittle afterwards and best of all, I needed to go to the salon less often as this toned my hair.” Kate, SUPERcrew member
#5 / L'Oréal Professionnel Serie Expert Silver Clarifying Shampoo
Great for blonde hair as well as white and grey hair, this purple toning shampoo is also a clarifying formula. It purifies hair and removes product build-up (which can cause dull and brassy tones), while the violet micro-pigments further neutralise yellow tones.
The review: “[When I was] a blonde, I swore by the L'Oréal Professionnel Serie Expert Silver Clarifying Shampoo. Using this purple shampoo a couple times a week made a massive difference in maintaining the cool undertones in my bleached hair and helped in prolonging my next visit to the salon.” Alex, SUPERcrew member
#4 / Fudge Clean Blonde Violet Toning Shampoo
This violet formula contains natural proteins that coat strands with a protective shield to prevent UV and other environmental damage, all while restoring your blonde shade back to its just-coloured tone.
The review: “I have been using this purple shampoo for years. It’s super pigmented, it does a great job of cleaning my hair, and after every wash my blonde highlights look fresh and brighter. I find I only need to use it once a fortnight.” Chelsea Tromans, Beauty Crew’s Contributing Editor
#3 / PRO:VOKE Touch Of Silver Brightening Shampoo
This purple shampoo is formulated to revitalise not just blonde hair, but also platinum blonde shades and white and grey hair. The violet pigment gets to work in as little as one wash to neutralise brassiness and nix dullness.
The review: “When I had blonde hair, I tried dozens of different toning products. The PRO:VOKE Touch Of Silver Brightening Shampoo quickly became one of my favourites because it works amazingly well, is quick and easy to use, and the price tag is very budget-friendly. The formula is incredibly pigmented, which is exactly what you need when you’re a natural brunette with lightened hair that’s prone to brassiness. Now that I’m back to being a brunette, I still use this product every other week to keep my hair on the cooler side of the spectrum. You also only need to leave it on for a few minutes for it to work, so it’s a great time-saver for those needing to tone their hair quickly.” Isobel Larkin, Beauty Crew’s Beauty Assistant
#2 / John Frieda Sheer Blonde Colour Renew Shampoo
This purple shampoo claims to rebalance blonde hair in just three washes, and uses optical brightening technology to absorb UV light so your hair colour remains true and bright between salon visits. When our Review Crew® members trialled this affordable shampoo, they were really happy with the results and gave it four stars.
The review: “The primary purpose of a purple shampoo is to knock out any signs of brassiness or orange tones, and John Frieda’s does exactly that. The bonus part of this shampoo? It smells reaaaally good, and you’ll get compliments when your hair is freshly washed. I guarantee it.” Iantha Yu, Beauty Crew’s Beauty Editor
#1 / TONI&GUY Purple Shampoo
Our Review Crew® were sent this purple shampoo and conditioner duo, and awarded both products four stars. While you don’t have to use both products together, their formulas do support one another to give you a brighter, more creamy shade of blonde at home. The formula also helps reduce colour fade.
The review: “2018 was the year I discovered that purple shampoo wasn’t just for those with a full head of blonde hair - it works on brown hair, too. I was tasked with trialling TONI&GUY’s new blonde-toning shampoo and conditioner on my balayage and the shampoo has been in my hair care routine ever since. The deep purple pigment helps lift my blonde and get rid of any brassiness between appointments. I tend to only use it once a month (or twice if I feel like I’ve really been mistreating my hair with heat styling). And you can’t go past that budget-friendly price point!” Carli Alman, Beauty Crew’s Editor
