There’s no denying that beach waves have become one of the most sought after hairstyles in recent years. And for good reason. We need only look to practically every red carpet event to see celebs such as Gigi Hadid and Blake Lively nail the look on the regular. If you’re looking for the best way to perfect tousled tresses according to your hair type, simply click through our gallery for our top tips and celebrity inspiration.
No beach wave gallery would be complete without the queen of the tousled wave, Blake Lively. If you’re sporting long locks, then recreating this hairstyle is easy, but having them stay put all day is the hard part. The secret to waves that won’t drop throughout the day is prepping your hair with a styling mousse when wet so your curls have a long-lasting hold.
Despite what you may have been led to believe, a bob hairstyle is incredibly versatile. To get beach waves with a shorter ‘do like Jennifer Lawrence, use a small-barrelled curling wand or hair straightener (here’s our guide to curling your hair with a straightener if you’re unsure) and add curls to small sections of hair at a time. Once finished, rake your fingers through the lengths to allow the curls to drop and settle, before spritzing your hair with a texturising spray or sea salt spray. We recommend Toni & Guy Sea Salt Spray and Eleven Australia Sea Salt Texture Spray.
Patience is the key to perfecting beach waves when you have thick hair like Shay Mitchell. In order to create a look that’s tousled but not too voluminous, work with layered sections starting from the bottom by the nape of the neck and working your way up. If you’re getting too much volume, alternate between tight and loose curls between each layer.
To ensure minimal heat styling damage is caused to fine and fragile hair strands, it’s important to use a styling tool you can set to a low heat or opt for heat-free methods. To recreate tousled texture similar to Emma Stone’s without a heat styling tool, tie your hair into a topknot before you go to bed and spritz hair with a texturising spray in the morning for a simple and effective way to create texture.
If you’re looking to recreate beach waves similar to Gigi Hadid, it’s easier to first blow-dry or straighten your curly hair so it’s more manageable when you go to add waves. However, if you prefer to embrace your natural curl like Beyonce, simply scrunch a product like Bumble and bumble’s Bb. Curl Defining Crème throughout wet hair. The cream formula works to create wavy curls that aren’t weighed down.
