Eyeliner is like the Lady Gaga of makeup – every time you think you know exactly what to expect, it goes and flips the script, reinventing itself yet again as the freshest thing around.

But while it definitely helps that beauty brands have become accustomed to releasing liners in every colour and consistency under the sun, it’s the celebrities that embrace playful liner looks (and the makeup artists that create them) that we have to thank for the endless amount of inspiration we’re blessed with.

So, in celebration of eyeliner and everything it’s done for us (AKA a lot), we’re rounding up the best celebrity liner looks to grace the ‘gram, all the way from subtle swipes of classic black to bold neon moments and glorious graphic wings…

Beyoncé

Beyoncé looked like she’d just stepped out of Studio 54 while celebrating the launch of her latest album ‘Renaissance’ in New York City. The pop star lined her lids with a chromatic shade of silver that matched her dramatically rhinestone-studded black bodysuit. We’re in love with this new era of Queen Bey.

Yara Shahidi

Every time Yara Shahidi and celebrity makeup artist Nikki Wolff link up, makeup magic happens. Their latest beauty brainchild is this bold negative space cat eye that perfectly perches itself atop Shahidi’s almond-shaped peepers. Someone pass us an inhaler; we’re struggling to breathe.

Hailey Bieber

Let’s be real, Coachella is essentially just an excuse to let loose and act like a big kid for a weekend (or two). Hailey Bieber understood the assignment perfectly and created a Y2K-inspired makeup and hair moment for the music festival. Makeup artist Mary Philips enhanced her lower lash line with a metallic denim-blue eyeliner, while Bieber’s wavy strands were decorated with a handful of baby braids.

Caroline Polachek

Just when we thought we’d seen every kind of eyeliner possible, musician Caroline Polachek introduced us to a style that’s completely alien to us. Celebrity makeup artist Colby Smith rimmed the upper lash line and lower reaches of Polachek’s eye area to create what can only be described as UFO eyeliner.

Cameron is constantly experimenting with graphic liner (and doesn't mind playing around with bold shades and shapes) but this Euphoria-inspired diamonte-adorned double wing has to be one of the most adventurous/artistic/amazing yet.

Hailey Bieber

It’s not often that we see Hailey Bieber step outside of her comfort zone of face-flattering neutrals, but when she does, boy is it good. This time Bieber teamed up with UK makeup artist Nikki Wolff (AKA @nikki_makeup) to delve into a palette of Christmas-inspired greens with a touch of sparkle (just to keep things festive y’know?). The emerald hue perfectly offsets the model’s hazel eyes and ties in with her plump nude-coloured pout. BRB, figuring out how to recreate this look for Christmas Day.

Twiggy, eat your heart out; Boynton's '60s-inspired mod liner is practically the chicest thing we've ever seen. It's the perfect mix of chalky shadow, a classic cat-eye and a flick of floating liner. Full marks.

It’s very much giving “Smells Like Teen Spirit” vibes and we’re here for every second of the ‘90s punk fantasy.

Valeria Ferriera created this updated take on the smokey eye for Bvlgari ambassador Iris Law at Milan fashion week, adding a flash of hot pink eyeliner to the outer corners of the model's almond-shaped eyes. The itty-bitty wing shows just how creative you can get with colour without looking like a clown in the process – a round of applause for the genius please.
