‘Floating liner’ is the latest trend taking over Instagram

Say goodbye to the beloved cat-eye!

While a black winged liner will remain a classic forever (is there anything more elegant than a well-executed cat eye?), it seems the beauty world is starting to shake things up a bit with the latest eyeliner trend of 2020 – the floating liner.

Although the importance of liner-to-lashline proximity has long been stressed by makeup artists and beauty heavyweights, the floating liner seems to be taking its cues from another 2020 beauty trend, the ‘negative space’ manicure.

The best way to describe the unconventional trend is basically any line around the eyes that isn’t explicitly anchored to anything else. Rather, the line is placed more in the eyelid crease or diagonally to the sides in a direction of a cat-eye.

Placing these swipes of pigment above the lid, gives a ‘floating’ illusion between the crease and the browbone – and trust us, some of the creations we’ve seen out there are utter works of art!

One thing’s for certain, the ‘floating liner’ is all about creativity, so don’t be afraid to embrace the trend whichever way suits you! Whether you prefer a more subtle iteration, like supermodel Gigi Hadid’s simple white lines, or are ready to elevate the trend with some colour and more dramatic shapes, the ball is entirely in your court.

Below, we’ve rounded up some of our favourite ‘floating liner’ looks to inspire your next glam!
