Today in strange beauty news, a freaky new cosmetic injectable trend known as ‘devil lips’ is completely blowing up the Internet. The craze, otherwise known as ‘octopus lips,’ is thought to have originated in Russia and appears to essentially involve injecting lip filler products into the perimeters of the lips to create a wavy appearance.
Anyway, this is a case where the old adage ‘a picture is worth a thousand words’ couldn’t be more appropriate, so we’re just going to leave this here…
A thread about ‘devil lips’ has taken off on Reddit, dividing Reddit users who either seem to be totally freaked out by the trend, or fascinated by it.
“I just got done watching Botched Bodies on Netflix. It gives me a foreboding feeling to look at these lips,” wrote one Redditor while another chimed in: “What sane person would want their upper lip shaped like a PIE CRUST?”
But, other Redditors didn't seem to mind the artificially-altered look.
“I kind of like it in a weird way,” wrote one Reddit-user, after which another agreed: “Yea! Glad someone else does! Thought I was creepy for a moment. Nah it’s kinda hot? Definitely some people could pull it off.”
However, regardless of whether you think the trend is aesthetically pleasing or not, experts have warned achieving ‘devil lips’ could be dangerous.
"Filler injected inappropriately could end up in a blood vessel, causing blockages and leading to necrosis (death) of the tissue. The vessels are around the lips, so using filler inappropriately is what can cause this,” said London-based Cosmetic Dentist and Facial Aesthetician Dr Krystyna Wilczynski in an interview with The Sun UK.
EEK! We think this is one beauty trend we’ll be passing on.
