Inside Madelyn Cline's exact diet and exercise routine
Filming 'Outer Banks' is a workout in itself

If you’ve watched mere moments of Outer Banks, you’ll know that Madelyn Cline has to be one of the fittest women on the planet. All that running, all that swimming, all that climbing, phew! Like, in the third season, her character Sarah Cameron hikes up a literal mountain before journeying through a hidden cave and even making a terrifying leap across a giant drop; the real ones know.
But while she’s learned to have a healthy relationship with her body over the years, Cline has been open about the tough time she had with body image growing up. "When I was younger, I did struggle with eating disorders, specifically when I was a teenager," she shared with Women's Health. "I think I was around 16 when I started working out a lot. I would wake up every morning at 5am and I would work out for 30 minutes. It was super rigorous cardio every day. I started cutting calories. I would eat like six almonds for breakfast because I didn't want to counteract the cardio that I just did."
"It turned into not feeding myself protein and not feeding my body what it needed when I was working out so much," Cline continued. "I worked out multiple times during the day. All I knew was I wasn't achieving a particular body image, and so I was angry. I was harming myself and starving myself in the process of trying to achieve that."
Luckily, her family was able to help provide perspective, and guide her on a journey toward appreciating and nourishing her body. "My mum was a wonderful help in that. She would stand there in the mirror with me and we would list out things that I liked about my body," she confirmed. "After that repetition those things became solidified in my mind. I like my curves, I like my hips, and after a while I started to love my body. I became so much happier."
So what are some of the healthier patterns she's picked up along said journey? Let’s break them down…
Diet: Always eating breakfast
“Sometimes I’ll wake up really hungry," Cline shared in a Harper's BAZAAR Food Diaries video. Her fave breakfast options for kicking that early morning hunger? "I’ll do a breakfast sandwich, oatmeal, [or] maybe a smoothie," she confirmed. Even before breakfast, though, she starts off with some old-fashioned hydration. “I usually wake up pretty thirsty, so I’ll probably chug some water," she added.
Diet: Takeout when she craves it
Cline is all about guilt-free trips to her favourite takeaway food spots. “On some days, [I’ll head to American takeaway chain] In-N-Out. My order is a double-double [burger] with everything on it, plus chopped chillies, with an animal-style fry (AKA loaded fries), and a Diet Coke.” Delish!
Diet: Late lunches
The Outer Banks star admits she generally prefers a later lunch, but mostly because her breakfast fills her up to the point that hunger slips her mind for a few hours. “Usually I’ll forget about lunch until I get hungry, which is probably maybe like 4pm. I’ll realise I haven’t eaten, then I will probably Postmates something, a sandwich of some type. Usually I’ll get a tuna melt – it’s been a big thing recently.”
Diet: On-set snacking
Cline certainly likes to have a tasty snack nearby, especially with all the energy she's exerting on the job! “If I’m going to snack, especially on-set, I’m probably going to go with Hot Cheetos, salt and vinegar chips, or those snap pea crisps," she also revealed. "[I also like] good old vegetables and hummus, [they’re] also delicious.”
She's a soup super fan! “For dinner, because usually I wait to eat lunch later, I will probably do something just a little lighter. I love soup: chicken tortilla soup, I love a good green soup, lemon orzo soup is really yummy. I like Matzah ball soup, [and] potato and leek soup. The possibilities are endless here.”
Diet: Charcuterie boards
Cline enjoys a spread, too; she's a big 'board' fan. “Sometimes I really love to just make a charcuterie board, basically just an adult ‘Lunchable’. My perfect board would be brie or brie-adjacent cheese," she noted. "I love to have a little bit of salami, prosciutto, and definitely crackers. I love to have some fruit on there, like grapes. I love to have a fig jam or a cherry jam, and some veggies."
Diet: Portioned dessert
Her sweet tooth isn't major, but she has a few faves up her sweet treat sleeve for when the cravings come calling. “I’m not a major dessert person, but every once in a while, I’ll get a craving for dessert," she noted. "There’s a bakery nearby, and I really love these little mini rum baba cakes, like these sponge cakes soaked in rum, and there’s just a little bit of cream filling. They’re so yummy, and they’re tiny and just enough. That’s all I need.” Side note? “I also love tiramisu,” she added.
Exercise: Shooting 'Outer Banks'
As we mentioned earlier, filming Outer Banks is a major workout in itself. "I get very sweaty. It’s a fun show, we have a good time shooting it. It is very physically demanding and emotionally taxing," Cline told Interview.
Exercise: Horse riding & hiking
A self-professed 'horse girl', Cline loves to find fun ways to be active, and horse riding is one of her favourites. "When I'm riding, I feel very centered," she shared with Vogue, also noting that she loves to take walks around Hollywood.
