Review: The new Dyson AirWrap Styler gave me bouncy Kate Middleton waves

And now I'm addicted!

When I first set eyes on the newest addition to Dyson’s hair range, the Dyson AirWrap Styler, I was sceptical to say the least.

Firstly, it’s a wet-to-dry styler, meaning it simultaneously dries and styles hair. I assumed this wouldn’t work for my wavy, often frizzy hair which needs an all-over blow-dry to smooth strands before any styling tools can approach it.

Secondly, jets of air literally pick up, whip and curl your hair around the tool. I Instantly envisioned my fine hair getting tangled and stuck around the barrelled attachment.

Thirdly, the AirWrap reaches temperatures of just around 100 degrees, which I’m told is a healthy heat your hair can handle. But surely this isn’t hot enough to create, set and hold curls in my hair…

Fast forward to twenty minutes later when I actually trialled the Dyson AirWrap Styler and all of my previous scepticism was swiftly blasted away. I soon realised that for me, a woman who styles her hair every single day, the Dyson AirWrap Styler is a total game-changer.

Dyson’s new styler uses jets of air to help you achieve voluminous curls, natural-looking waves and smooth blow-dry finishes at home. It comes with eight different attachments and is suitable for all hair types.

On the day I trialled the tool, my hair was already dry, but a quick spritz of water prepped my hair for styling. It’s recommended that hair should be just damp to use the styler – around 80% dry. The Airwrap Styler has a hairdryer attachment to ready lengths for styling.

I wanted a loose, bouncy, curl (à la Duchess Kate) so I was advised by a Dyson hair expert to use 30mm AirWrap barrel attachment, which is the smallest of the two barrels, because I have short, shoulder-length hair.

I separated my hair as I usually would before styling with a tool or tong and picked up a decent-sized section of hair. Pinching my strands about 10cm away from their ends, I held the hair infront of the styler and turned it on. Woosh! My strands wrapped around the styler as I pulled it closer to my head. I flicked the switch to give it a cool shot of air to set the hair, turned it off and pulled the tool downward to release a perfectly tight curl – sans tangles! I did my hair all over in 10 minutes.

When finished, using my hands I pulled out the '90s bridesmaid ringlets I'd created and was pleasantly surprised to see ahead of full, voluminous waves

Returning to the InStyle office members of the team asked if I’d had a blow-dry, to which I smugly responded, “Nope, I did this myself.”

The Dyson AirWrap Styler not only gives a glorious salon finish at-home, it’s not as taxing on your hair’s health. Often, styling hair means blow drying before styling, so double the heat damage.

But, because the hair is already damp, and the air emitted from styler is so powerful you don’t need extreme temperatures to style hair.

If you use the styler, overtime it’s expected you will see a difference in the health of your strands.

The Dyson AirWrap Styler is available today for $699 (perhaps Santa is feeling generous this year?) on Dyson.com.au and in-store at David Jones and Myer from 13th October.
