With new makeup techniques like strobing, scooping and striping becoming more popular, there comes a need to reinvent a classic tool - the makeup sponge. Gone are the days of using a tiny wedge of soft sponge to do everything, from blending foundation into your skin to applying cream products on your face; here are the latest and greatest makeup sponges to hit counters, and how to use them.
If you’re obsessed with beautyblenders as much as we are, then we’re sure you’ll be just as excited to find out about the launch of their two new colours - orange and green - in a pack alongside the original pink tool. Our tip: Use a different colour per product type - like the orange for your primer, the pink for your foundation and the green one for your concealer. If you’ve never used one before, the rules are simple: wet the sponge thoroughly with water, squeeze out any excess, then tap the sponge over your foundation for a perfect complexion.
Real Techniques Miracle Sculpting Sponge
You can’t go past this sculpting sponge if you’re looking for something that’ll give you change from a tenner. Use the larger side to contour with cream or powder products, then highlight with the smaller side to accentuate cheek and brow bones.
Stila Double-Ended Blending Sponge
Stila Double-Ended Blending Sponge may feel denser than the others, but it does an incredible job at applying makeup and blending it out so it looks natural on your face. Top points for durability.
Givenchy Makeup Blender
If you’re looking for a chic accessory to go with the rest of your impressive makeup collection, then Givenchy’s version of a makeup sponge could be perfect for you. Use the sides to apply liquid products (such as a foundation) all over, and use the pointed tips to work around harder to reach areas like your nose and eyes.
Revlon 4-in-1 Blending Sponge
This clever tool can help you when applying product, blending it out, contouring with darker shades and correcting for a more flawless finish. Plus, we love its ergonomic design, and how it’s denser at the bottom yet soft and flexible at the tip so it feels more gentle on skin.
Real Techniques Miracle Diamond Sponge
This sponge is as pretty as it is practical. Use the flat top to buff and blend foundation, the small and large flat sides to apply product, and the pointed tip to perfect your final makeup look.
ModelRock Base Maker Blendable Coverage "Pro" Beauty Sponge "Mini"
They may be teeny in size (about an inch tall), but these ModelRock sponges are surprisingly good at blending products like mousse eyeshadows and concealer into smaller areas like around the inner corner of the eye and around the curves of the nose.
EcoTools Perfecting Blender Duo
This two-pack of sponges is ideal for perfecting your complexion. Use the larger side to apply product, the round base to stipple foundation onto skin for a more airbrushed finish, and the flat wedge to apply contouring products in a straight line.
