Chunky headbands are back, according to Afterpay Australian Fashion Week

And we kinda love it?!

Editor / May 13 2022

We've entered an era of beauty revivals and we're not mad about it. From Kylie Jenner's thin eyebrows to Megan Fox's concealer lips, anything from the '90s, '00s, and schoolyard is fair game.

So we shouldn't have really been surprised when chunky headbands made an appearance at Afterpay Australian Fashion Week.

Oh yes, the very same wide strips of material we used to plonk on our foreheads pre-hockey game have been given a modern edge.

Spotted on multiple models at the Oroton show, 'thick' was the key characteristic of the hair accessories showcased. Some were simple, some were striped, and others featured subtle embellishments.

But what was different about this headband trend from other recent ones was that the designs sat fairly flat on the hair. Unlike padded and knotted headbands, which were all about height in 2019, this look really was reminiscent of our youth and sports carnival days. So will we be seeing a modern revival of the thick headband? We kinda hope so...

Tips to pull off a thick headband

Based on the Oroton show, here's how to make a thick headband look chic instead of childish.

#1/ Make sure a centimetre or two of hair is still visible between your forehead and your headband

#2/ Pair it with a sleek, pulled-back low bun for a sophisticated beach-time look

#3/ Or layer over a bob cut and amp up the volume of the ends

P.S. You can also try emulating the style with a hair scarf you already own. Just fold it into a similar thickness and tie it at the nape of your neck.
