While the lob is still having a big moment, the bob seems to getting more and more attention. Given its growing popularity, we would forgive you for taking the plunge and getting your lengths chopped off. We spoke to hairstylist Simon Bright from Jonny + June Hair, who explains why it’s the hair trend that’s taking over Hollywood, how to find the perfect bob type to suit your hair, and the must-read tips for styling your new ‘do.
“Bobs are trendy, modern, versatile and most of all suitable for everyone!” Bright says. “Your hairdresser will guide you to the perfect bob, whether it’s slightly more edgy or something softer,” he adds. While it’s a ‘do that can work for any hair type and face shape, Bright warns that “short hair needs a lot more maintenance to keep its style, so be prepared to get it regularly cut every six weeks to maintain the shape.”
If you’ve decided to take the plunge and try a bob hairstyle, here are our favourite celebrity bobs for all your cut and style inspiration, and how to style them.
Cara Delevingne's blunt razored bob
Cara Delevingne’s blunt razored bob (her latest style before her now-famous shaved head) is great for all hair types, Bright explains. This is also one of the easiest to style, as it’s a bit more undone. Add a sea salt spray such as Eleven Sea Salt and blast the hair dry with a blow-dryer, smoothing slightly as you go with a medium-sized brush. Create soft bends through the mid section with a medium tong or iron, remembering to leave the ends straight. A volume spray or dry shampoo at the front will help create a matte texture.
Selena Gomez's tapered bob
Selena Gomez’s sleek, centre parted, and tapered bob is perfect for fine to medium or curly hair, and those who want a voluminous but sleek look, says Bright. His top styling tips are to use a heat protectant such as Kérastase L’Incroyable Blow Dry, and an anti-humectant to reduce frizz, such as John Frieda Frizz Ease. Run a straightening iron through the lengths, but avoid the roots as this will cause flatness. Finish with a gloss spray or serum to get that ultra shiny finish like Selena.
Vanessa Hudgens's soft layered bob
Vanessa Hudgens’ deep side part and layered soft waves are perfect for “fine to medium thickness hair or curly hair wanting something glamorous but textured,” says Bright. He recommends adding a foundation product such as Mr. Smith The Foundation to the roots and ends and comb through. Create a soft wave in the hair with an iron or curling tong. Bright’s advice is to always tong the hair away from the face to keep the look modern. Spray with a hairspray such as L’Oréal Elnett Satin and allow to cool for 10 minutes before brushing to loosen the curls.
Salma Hayek's A-line bob
Salma Hayek’s polished, A-line bob is perfect for thick and curly hair types who want a smooth, sophisticated look. It is also one of the simplest looks to achieve. Using a heat protectant and frizz serum beforehand, section hair and smooth straight with an iron, adding a slight bend in the end of the hair to create that classic swinging bob effect. Then finish with a gloss spray or serum such as Mr. Smith Serum for a flawless, fly-away free finish.
Kylie Jenner's blunt bob
Kylie Jenner’s blunt bob is great for thick hair types who want a sharp, heavy look. Bright recommends using a paddle brush to blow-dry the hair flat to the head. “Your hair’s natural thickness will create body,” he explains. Then, use a straightening iron to smooth hair flat and keep the ends straight before applying a pomade such as Kérastase Elixir Creme to the root area only for that wet, glossy look.
Lara Worthington's tousled layered bob
Lara Worthington's tousled, layered bob is the perfect cut for fine hair. The layers help give fine hair some extra volume, while with the blunt ends work to make the hair look thicker. To give your hair texture and volume like Lara, use a straightener to create soft waves and movement, and create deep side par to give volume at the roots and will prevent the hair from falling flat against your face.
Whether you prefer it out or up, here are some more chic ways to style your new bob.
