Kaia Gerber’s ‘wolf cut’ is set to be the hair trend of the season

The lovechild of the mullet and the shag cut explained

Hair trends in 2021 have been undeniably DIY in nature, with more people than ever Googling how to cut their own hair at home.

But even as we’re filtering out of our houses, vaccination passports in hand and ready to quench our thirst for socialisation, at the salon it seems we’re gravitating towards styles that look slightly unkempt. Hello? The mullet celebrity hair trend is still going strong after it’s inception in the hellfire that was 2020.

Case and point? It-girl Kaia Gerber has followed in the footsteps of Billie Eilish and snagged herself a shaggy ‘wolf cut’ in the last 24 hours alone.

As celeb hairstylist Sarah Potempa told InStyle, “the wolf haircut is a mix between a vintage shag and a slight mullet.” AKA making it the perfect style for those of us unsatisfied with a standard shag but too scared to enter into mullet territory (relatable).

The latest A-lister to join the ever growing pack of celebrities to chop their strands into a shaggy wolf cut? Killing Eve star Jodie Comer. Prolific hair stylist Sam McKnight was the talent behind the new cut, and he (hilariously) gave Comer curtain bangs and choppy layers from the comfort of his own kitchen. Sounds like a dream TBH.

If you thought a wolf cut was better suited to short and mid-length hair, then you can think again. Camila Cabello’s hair stylist, Dimitris Giannetos, utilised the principles of the edgy cut to add body and movement to the 25-year-old’s honey blonde highlighted strands. And in Giannetos’ own words, the result is “fire”.

Needed further proof that the wolf cut was *the* hair trend of the year? Star of Wednesday, Jenna Ortega, just appeared on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon with a fresh wolf cut shag. Now that the coolest girl in Hollywood has given the haircut her co-sign we’re expecting to see a whole lot more of the hairstyle in 2023 (and we’re not mad about it).

This isn’t Kaia’s first time dabbling with hybrid hairstyles, however, the model was a pioneer in the bixie cut trend (a happy medium between a pixie cut and a bob if you didn’t know), which has started to take off with models and A-listers alike.

Want to stay ahead of the curve (and trendsetter Kaia Gerber)? These are the expert-approved hair colours, cuts and styles set to trend in 2022.
