Is Abbie Chatfield reviving Y2K blue eyeshadow?

The early 2000s may have only been nine years ago in our minds, but in reality it’s been two decades (and we’re seriously assessing our age). Like fashions, beauty trends roll around every few years, and the latest one to make a triumphant return is our beloved Y2K nostalgia. Yep, butterfly clips , flip phones and (hopefully less) plucked brows are all back for round two.
BEAUTYcrew recently spoke with Brissy-based Aussie makeup artist Renae (MUA), also known as the lady who singlehandedly brought the Y2K revival back in a bold way with Abbie Chatfield’s AACTA award red carpet look. Here’s how to master the throwback look…

ICYMI: The AACTA awards were held up on the Gold Coast over the weekend, so the hot and humid weather gave the Aussie stars an unintentional glow, whether they were after it or not. Thankfully the FBoy Island host was opting for just that. Renae let us in on the deliberate makeup choices she made to create the natural highlight, “Making the skin matte in all the right areas” meant the dewiness could peek through “rather than [layering] excessive powder highlights”. The long-wearing base in question? Glow-getting Dior Backstage Face & Body Foundation ($79 at Adore Beauty). As gorgeous as said base is, however, Renae mentioned that it wasn’t hard to create such an effortless glow because Abbie “has the most beautiful natural skin” which we know can be credited to her consistent skin care routine (and Aussie brand TBH).
Y2K makeup
We personally have a bit of blue eyeshadow trauma from the first time around, but seeing Chatfield’s look has us second guessing our doubts. But before we crack out our (very) out of date old palettes, let’s see the products Renae used to create the iconic look.
Because Chatfield “wanted cool toned blues” Renae used a base of the colour-extending P.Louise Cosmetic Paint (we suspect in the shade ‘Nitro’) ($29 at P Louise). To give the colour an extra pop of vibrancy, Renae layered a powder shadow on top; the bright baby blue shadow in question was the MECCA Max single shadow pot in ‘Mom Jeans’ ($10 at MECCA).
