When you think of Ariana Grande’s beauty look there’s a good chance her super long hair and signature ponytail are the first things that come to mind. But while we had long thought Ariana’s reason for wearing her signature hairstyle was out of love for the ‘do, it turns out the ponytail was born as a solution to hiding the damage caused by having to dye her hair red on a weekly basis for her role as Cat on the TV show, Victorious.
“I wear [my hair] in a ponytail because my actual hair is so broken that it looks absolutely ratchet and absurd when I let it down,” Ariana wrote in a Facebook post on her page back in 2014.
Since those hair-damaged days, Ariana’s mane has undergone a complete hair health transformation, with the singer sporting waist-length locks (by choice, not necessity!) that would make any hairdresser proud. Although we can’t help but notice that the star still loves her go-to high ponytail, but at least she isn’t afraid to switch up her lengths every now and again, too. Last year the singer teamed her long hair with a front fringe and she even debuted a Daenerys Targaryen-like hair transformation only a few months ago.
As for how Ariana nursed her long hair back to healthy, the singer revealed all to Allure recently, and it involves two ingredients you may already be familiar with.
The singer uses coconut oil as a pre-wash hair treatment to nourish her locks (if you’re not up to speed on the beauty benefits of coconut oil, here’s why you should be using it in your routine, too), as well as lavender essential oil. Lavender oil has been found (when used in small, concentrated doses) to soothe itchy scalps and in some cases promote hair growth, so we can see why Ariana is a fan (although we recommend using the essential oil sparingly – or better yet, look for products that are formulated with the ingredient, such as Christophe Robin Moisturizing Hair Oil with Lavender).
So there you have it, the secret to long hair Ariana Grande would be proud of may already be lurking in your kitchen and bathroom cupboards. Who knew?
