We review the best concealers
The ones we count on to conceal our imperfections
Beauty Crew Contributing Editor / December 17 2018
We don’t know where we’d be without our eye-opening mascara, or our base-perfecting foundation. But concealer - it’s our silent assassin. Its job is to make imperfections disappear without a trace. The trouble is, finding a really good one is not easy. Unless you have a list of highly-recommended concealers with glowing reviews, that is. Of which we have right here. We asked our Beauty Crew team and SUPERcrew members to share their top picks for the best concealer in Australia. These are the ones they love.
#11 / Innoxa Dark Circles Concealer
This full-coverage concealer is great for brightening the look of dark circles and hiding blemishes. The formula is vegan and oil-free, and it brightens and hydrates skin with anti-inflammatory and antioxidant-rich vitamins B3 and E, shea butter and liquorice extract.
The review: “I'm pretty lazy when it comes to make-up so I really just want a concealer that goes on easily, stays on, and blends well with foundation or tinted moisturiser. This is great for those things and even on its own it looks natural while covering up dark circles and any problem areas. This contains shea butter, too, which helps it feel great on skin; no drying out of the face with this. Cruelty-free and vegan, too!” Milan, SUPERcrew member
#10 / Estée Lauder Double Wear Stay-in-Place Flawless Wear Concealer SPF 10
A great on-the-go concealer for popping in your handbag, we love the 15-hour coverage that this concealer provides, plus its natural matte finish. Also worth raving about is how it’s oil-free and water, perspiration, transfer and humidity-resistant.
The review: “I love Estée Lauder Double Wear Concealer at the moment. It is creamy, blends into the skin well, and has a good coverage. I don’t find it too heavy and use it for my under-eye area. It smells nice, too.” Anita, SUPERcrew member
#9 / Rimmel London Insta Conceal & Correct
If you battle a variety of imperfections on the regular, then a colour correcting palette needs to be in your makeup kit. This one comes with three colours - a peach concealer to cover dark circles; a green tone to reduce redness; and a lilac one to counteract dullness. The formula is rich and creamy for maximum coverage, and is enriched with brightening vitamin C, redness-reducing chamomile and anti-shine powders for a perfected complexion.
The review: “I have fair skin and a multitude of different things I want to disguise on my face, so this set of three coloured concealers is perfect for me; an all-in-one that is perfect size-wise for the handbag. I use it for dark circles and redness mostly, and it blends so beautifully without that sticky mask feeling. Makeup like foundation and BB creams go on easily on top without pilling. Great price for the amount of use I get out of it!” Georgia, SUPERcrew member
#8 / Benefit Cosmetics Boi-ing Hydrating Concealer
Benefit’s iconic Boi-ing concealer actually comes in four variants, and we recommend them all - just take your pick based on what your top concerns are. This hydrating one is the best all-rounder. The coverage is sheer, lightweight and hydrating so it won’t settle into fine lines or look crepey under the eyes.
The review: “This stick not only softens the under-eye area - thanks to its vitamin E and apple seed extract-infused formula - but hides dark circles with just the right amount of concealer so it doesn’t sit in your wrinkles. Genius!” Adriana Donnola, New Idea and Who Executive Beauty Editor
#7 / Nude By Nature Flawless Concealer
With a name like ‘Flawless Concealer’, Nude By Nature definitely set the expectations high. And thankfully, this formula lives up to its accolades. Its full coverage formula has a satin-matte finish that leaves imperfections undetectable. It also boasts a long list of nourishing (mostly Australian) ingredients, like anti-ageing Kakadu plum, brightening desert lime, and skin renewing quandong, making it a must-have for concealing and treating dark circles in one, as well as for use on other areas of the complexion. This concealer is also dermatologist tested, fragrance-free and suitable for sensitive skin.
The review: “This is a godsend on the days when those shadows under my eyes are looking a little too pronounced. It’s quite a pigmented formula, so you don’t need much, but you do need to put some effort into blending as it is quite thick. I find that a sponge doesn’t always cut it, so I use a foundation brush. As the formula is a little creamy and I do get oily in the day, I finish with a translucent powder to set the concealer and prevent creasing.” Carli Alman, Beauty Crew’s Editor
#6 / Too Faced Born This Way Concealer
This is more than just an oil-free concealer; you’ll find a lot of skin-loving ingredients in the mix, such as hydrating and plumping hyaluronic acid, and radiance-boosting alpine rose. This concealer is great for concealing redness, blemished and dark circles, and comes in 16 shades.
The review: “Finding a concealer that doesn’t cake or crack after a few hours of wear may seem near-impossible, but Too Faced’s Born This Way Concealer has challenged those notions. The creamy formula is ultra-blendable, keeps skin surprisingly hydrated underneath, and the finish is natural and undetectable (just like the Born This Way Foundation).” Iantha Yu, Beauty Crew’s Beauty Editor
#5 / Yves Saint Laurent Beauté Touché Eclat
This concealer pen has a cult following and deserves all the praise it gets. While considered a highlighter thanks to its light-reflecting pigments (sans shimmer or glitter), it offers a buildable sheer to medium coverage that brightens, smooths and erases imperfections. The built-in brush makes for easy application and its lightweight texture feels invisible on skin.
The review: “YSL Touché Eclat is easily the best concealer I’ve ever used. It magically makes me look like I did pre-child - rested! It’s my secret weapon, 10 hours of sleep in one easy application. A must-have for all tired mums or anyone with a social life.” Anne, SUPERcrew member
#4 / Genie Full Coverage Line Smoothing Concealer
If most of your concealing requirements are focused around the eye area (think fine lines, wrinkles and dark circles), then this stick concealer is for you. It has a full coverage but it’s also ultra nourishing so it won’t settle in your creases or wrinkles and it tackles your ageing concerns while you wear it - safflower seed oil, sweet almond oil, shea butter, vitamin E and hyaluronic acid deliver anti-ageing benefits to skin. Plus, the coverage is waterproof and brightening.
The reviews: “This concealer is one of the newest members of my beauty kit and I’m absolutely obsessing over it! It’s seriously the creamiest, most blendable and natural-looking concealer I’ve ever used. It covers dark circles and blemishes with ease, without that annoying cakey/creasy look. It’s super lightweight and lets your skin still look like skin.” Erin Docherty, Beauty Crew Contributor
“I have never used a concealer that is as silky soft as this one - which I think is a HUGE must when applying it under the eyes. I also love its cream consistency because it stays put and offers high coverage, and its stick packaging - I carry it in my handbag at all times. It’s one of the best concealers I’ve ever used to conceal dark circles (NARS Radiant Creamy Concealer is another winner) and hides blemishes really well, too.” Chelsea Tromans, Beauty Crew’s Contributing Editor
#3 / NARS Radiant Creamy Concealer
Boasting an impressive 18 shades to suit everyone from the lightest fair skin to ultra dark skin tones, this liquid concealer recently won the MECCA Beauty Election 2018 in the Concealer category. This concealer is an excellent go-to concealer for those who need a full coverage. And while it does deliver maximum coverage, it doesn’t feel heavy or cakey on the skin; instead it offers up a beautiful luminous and hydrating finish. The ultra-blendable formula makes it ideal for concealing all over the complexion.
The review: “If you’re after a full coverage concealer that covers dark circles just as well as it hides blemishes, then the NARS Radiant Creamy Concealer is for you. Despite its creamy formula, it never creases under my eyes and it always provides the perfect veil of coverage, making me look 10 times better than I actually deserve.” Kate Niven, Beauty Crew’s Beauty Writer
#2 / Tarte Shape Tape Contour Concealer
Touted as America’s #1 concealer (one sells every 12 seconds worldwide!), with over 8500 reviews and a five-star rating on their own website, this concealer has a MASSIVE fan base. Why? For starters, it has 30 shades in the range, so you’re bound to find your perfect skin tone match. It also hides just about *everything* with its matte, full coverage and ultra creamy, easy-to-blend texture. In the formula you’ll find nourishing mango seed and shea butter, and brightening liquorice extracts; and what you won’t find is any parabens, mineral oil, phthalates, triclosan, sodium lauryl sulfate or gluten.
The reviews: “The best concealer is the Tarte Shape Tape. I have naturally dark under eye circles and the smallest amount of this concealer covers them up seamlessly without creasing, and lasts all day. I have already re-purchased this a couple times and don't see myself finding a new Holy Grail anytime soon!” Alex, SUPERcrew member
“Tarte Shape Tape: It just works!” Jovanka, SUPERcrew member
#1 / Maybelline New York Instant Age Rewind® Eraser Dark Circles Concealer + Treatment
This Maybelline concealer was the most popular pick amongst our SUPERcrew members. It has a unique built-in sponge tip, which makes application easy and allows it to provide an airbrushed effect on skin. It delivers a full yet weightless coverage that works a treat to conceal dark circles as it imparts a luminous finish. The formula is enriched with goji berry and Haloxyl™ to provide antioxidant protection and to help brighten dark circles with continued use.
The reviews: “A lightweight, creamy formula that is perfect for brightening dark shadows and covering blemishes; I feel it focuses primarily on hiding my dark under-eye circles. It has a sponge-type applicator, which makes it super easy to apply and contour. The shade range is really broad and being such a popular brand it is affordable and easily accessible.” Amanda, SUPERcrew member
“I've been using the Maybelline Age Rewind concealer for a few years now and I absolutely love it. I find that the formula of the concealer is very lightweight for under my eyes. I do have normal to dry skin, depending on the seasons. I find that it does help with puffiness and dark circles and fine lines. 5 shades to suit anyone. I don't mind the sponge application on top as I can just run it under the eyes or over a few dark spots and then use a concealer brush to blend in. After a week, I tend to wipe the sponge with an antibacterial cloth, which cleans the sponge really well. Keeps it more hygenic. So far I haven't changed as I do love it.” Amanda, SUPERcrew member
“My favourite concealer is Maybelline Age Rewind. It has a medium coverage but is buildable. The sponge on the end of the wand makes it easy to apply and its thin but pigmented formula means it blends seamlessly into the skin.” Ruby, SUPERcrew member
