Crystals have a bad rap for being a little 'woo-woo'. And while we have to admit they aren’t going to magically fix all of your problems, we think having a piece of mother earth around is weirdly comforting.
Some of you may have heard of certain crystal benefits, while others may have no idea where to start. But whichever crystal knowledge camp you fall into, we’re here to help.
BEAUTYcrew spoke with the founder of crystal-infused candle brand Myles Gray, Janelle Palibrk, who gave us the lowdown on how you can introduce crystals into your wellness practice.
How to use crystals
If you ask Palibrk, crystals are essential to our daily practice. . “They bring the most beautiful energy into our home and lives,” she says. “ Each crystal is so different you can really dictate the energy you want to bring into your wellness practice.”
If you’re new to the crystal game entirely or are looking to switch up your stones, Palibrk suggests doing so slowly. “I would always recommend adding one crystal at a time and really connecting to that crystal.”
When asked for further dos and don’ts around daily crystal use, she answered,“I am a big believer in making crystal healing really simple.”
“I always keep protective crystals near my front door; black tourmaline, black obsidian and labradorite are a few options.”
“Rose quartz is great in the heart of the home, amethyst is beautiful in the bedroom or to meditate with,” she continues. “I also carry around a clear quartz point at the moment, to amplify my spiritual awareness.”
If you’re keen to use multiple crystals at once, placing them around different areas of the home can work wonders. “Manifesting with a crystal grid is [also] an amazing technique to use,” Palibrk says. However, “it can be a little more complex.”
Ready to embrace all forms of energies?
From protective stones that don’t play when it comes to bad juju or confidence-boosting crystals that’ll give you that little energetic kick up the butt right when you need it, these are some of our favourite crystals to keep on hand for a bit of relief from the rigors of daily life.
The best crystals and their uses
“Clear Quartz amplifies all other crystals and also gives off this incredibly vibrant energy”, says Palibrk, “[it] just makes you feel so happy.” Well on that note… BRB while we find as much clear quartz as we possibly can. Known as the master healer in the world of crystals, this translucent pick helps you to open your mind, elevating any negativity you may currently be experiencing, as well as moving energetic blockages.

A great crystal to have on hand for clearing negativity and addictive behaviours, amethyst is a spiritually enlightening stone that makes it a no-brainer for meditation seshes (or even a bit of lucid dreaming, if you’re so inclined). “Amethyst is so beautiful,” says Palibrk, “it is calming and allows you to see clearly.” It’s no wonder then that this protective pick aids in creative thinking, and as ancient philosophers believed, wards against public drunkenness.

What is smokey quartz good for you may ask? Well, according to Palibrk, “Smokey quartz is very grounding, it keeps you from exaggerating situations. Like if someone doesn’t text you back you won’t go into a spiral of ‘maybe they hate me, what did I do’ etc.”. As chronic overthinkers we’re adding several of these protective stones to our home AND person. Say buh-bye to unnecessary toxicity and hello to a soothed soul.

A personal favourite of Palibrk’s, the candle-maker admits, “I actually have about nine pyrite crystals in my home.” Why is she so obsessed with the crystal? Well, “Pyrite is about prosperity and abundance, [making it] an absolute essential in any home.” The manifestation stone’s focus and passion-enhancing qualities don’t hurt either, making it a great pick to haul into the office too.

According to Palibrk, rhodonite is a stone of compassion, meaning it “helps with trauma healing so can bring up a lot of emotions.” Not for the faint of heart, this pick aids in healing emotional self-destruction, codependency and abuse in relationships. Fun fact about rhodonite courtesy of Palibrk: “if you place Rhodonite on a mozzie bite it will stop itching.” The more you know aye...

About to have a difficult conversation? Well then you might want to keep a piece of amazonite on hand. This blue stone alleviates awkwardness, promoting loving communication when you need it the most, while Palibrk personally loves using the crystal for “emotional healing and chakra balancing”. It’s all about less stress and higher self-esteem with this selection. Get you some.

Not just a beautiful finish for your marble-top kitchen counter, “white quartz is a beautiful protective stone that can transmute negative energy and purify it,” says Palibrk. Enhance your psychological powers with this milky-white stone that promotes wisdom and sharpens the mind.

As Myles Founder, Janelle Palibrk explains, “black tourmaline is protective, it will create a shield of protection around you and block negative energy.” A tried and true pick for warding off bad vibes, we recommend taking full advantage of Black Tourmaline’s protective properties and stunning inky black aesthetic by wearing a piece of jewellery that incorporates the crystal. Great for the anxious among us, this stone will help you to maintain your chill regardless of what’s going on around you.

The sage of the crystal world, consider Selenite as the ultimate energetic juice cleanse, clearing bad energies and resetting the ~vibes~ of literally anything — including other crystals. Take Palibrk’s advice and invest in “a selenite bowl or plate. [You can place] crystals on top of that and it will cleanse them.”
Disclaimer: Selenite is water soluble and melts in water, kinda like the wicked witch of the west if you will, making this a strictly ‘smoke cleanse only’ crystal

The energy of Honey Calcite is comparable to a hug from your best friend on a bad day. The pearlescent honey hued stone promotes confidence and motivation so you can have the juice to get your shit done. Plus, it’s memory-boosting properties make it a great pick to keep on hand when you’re feeling a little scatter-brained.

It’s all love, baby. At least, that’s the vibe when you have a piece of rose quartz around. “Rose quartz brings a calm and loving energy, it helps you to give and accept love freely,” says Palibrk. The pink precious stone amplifies feelings of unconditional love, making it a great gift for loved ones or if you’re trying to inject a bit of high consciousness and self-care into your routine. A great healing stone as well, rose quartz tackles negative energies and heavy emotions at the source.
