This technique will give you the low-maintenance hair colour of your dreams

Move over ombre and balayage

We have seen the likes of ombre, balayage, and most recently hair contouring take over in recent years due to the low maintenance nature of these hair colouring techniques. However, there is now another way to get the perfectly highlighted, yet still low maintenance colour of your dreams, with the latest technique known as gloss smudging.

Currently a huge trend in salons throughout Los Angeles, the technique is described as “the process of smudging colour at the root of your hair to help it blend more seamlessly – giving you that ‘I woke up like this’ look,” says MOB Hair Salon co-founder, Tarryn Cherniayeff. While it is not limited to blondes, the technique is intended for those aiming to lighten their hair colour, so the toner can work its magic.

Gloss smudging involves having your foils applied and removed as usual, however, after removing them the colourist will go back in with a brush and apply a gloss or toner at the roots. This part is usually completed at the basin on damp hair, says Cherniayeff.

The finished result is “a blurred seamless root-to-end colour; you are unable to see where your foils start,” she says. This is ideal for avoiding the ‘just coloured look’ and provides an easy to maintain and more natural approach when lightening the hair.
