Her hairstylist tells us how in an exclusive interview

Lauren Conrad has been rocking her trademark loose waves for as long as we can remember. And although we love it when celebrities experiment with their beauty look, we’re also firm believers that if something isn’t broken, you don’t need to fix it. While we’ve tried our hand at replicating her beachy waves many times before, it never quite comes out as effortlessly flawless as Lauren’s signature look. So when we sat down with Lauren’s long-time hairstylist Kristin Ess in an exclusive interview, the first thing we asked her was how to recreate Lauren’s tousled lob *exactly*. And she gladly obliged!

1

Create texture

The secret to the perfect tousled lob lies in creating texture. “If you don’t have natural texture in your hair or your hair is dead straight, I recommend waving it first with a curling iron,” says Ess. To keep your waves looking soft and subtle rather than tight and curly, opt for a wand with a larger barrel and wrap small sections of hair loosely around the iron. Ess also suggests curling each section in the same direction.

2

Drag out the ends

Another way to avoid making your hair look too curly is to drag out the ends. After you’ve created your wave and before you release your hair from within the curling wand, pull the curl down so it straightens out the ends, says Ess. “Dragging out the ends is kind of my signature move and I think that’s what gives the hair that I do that specific look,” she adds.

3

Combine your styling products

“My favourite way to perfectly finish off any tousled look is to combine texture spray on top and beach spray on the underside of your hair,” shares Ess. “The texture spray is able to give you the volume and texture you need throughout your roots, and the beach spray creates the separation and shine through the ends. It’s this blend of the two styling products that enables you to create that perfect ‘second-day’ texture.”
