The $21 hair tool behind Olivia Rodrigo's silky smooth Oscars waves

It’s always involved in her red carpet hair routine

Having hair as long as Olivia Rodrigo’s can certainly pose a challenge in the styling stakes. There’s just so much to deal with! Long hair basically offers an eternally open invitation to tangles – they form quickly and can be near impossible to deal with.

So how does she always step onto the red carpet with silky strands from roots to ends? One glimpse at her glossy waves at the Vanity Fair Oscars after-party and it’s clear there was some wizardry at work! But there’s no need to lose sleep over it; we’ve solved the mystery! Here’s the $25 hair tool she relies on…

How Olivia Rodrigo styles her hair

Rodrigo’s hair stylist Clayton Hawkins confessed his go-to for keeping her hair smooth, soft and completely tangle-free, and it’s all about reframing a step you commit to every day.

Basically, no matter how much you love your current brush of choice, it's time to switch to a Tangle Teezer. In fact, if you trawl Hawkins’ Instagram for snaps of Rodrigo, you’ll notice that the Tangle Teezer account is mentioned in every one – that’s how essential it is to the pair’s routine.

His reasoning? Hair health! “I start by brushing Olivia’s wet hair with Tangle Teezer’s The Ultimate Detangler ($21.95 at Amazon), which quickly and gently detangles with reduced breakage,” he once shared.

Hawkins is spot on with that assessment – unlike other hair brushes, The Ultimate Detangler is all about nixing those knots with no pulling, tugging, or snagging (a real rarity when working with wet hair).

Rodrigo has definitely been known to take some hair risks (remember the spiky buns reminiscent of Mandy Moore’s “Candy” video?), but her signature hair look is definitely a glossy down-do. She doesn’t even usually commit to much heat styling (the most we’ll usually see is a super soft wave through her naturally straight hair), so the brush is actually the main player in her red carpet hair ritual.

Besides said brush, her other fave essential is simply a quick coating of hair oil for hydration and frizz-prevention. "Something that I really love also is hair oil. I put a little bit on my fingertips [and work it in],” she shared with Vogue, revealing her love for the Kérastase Elixir Ultime Original Hair Oil ($72 at Adore Beauty).
