Gone are the days of shelling out on a new lipstick only to find it’s the wrong shade for you. Pinterest is launching a new ‘Try On’ feature allowing users to virtually apply makeup products to their own faces.

Bringing new meaning to ‘try before you buy,’ the augmented reality feature uses ‘Lens,’ Pinterest’s smart camera, to allow Pinners to try products on their own faces with as much ease as taking a selfie.

If the user decides they like the product, a handy swipe up feature links them directly to the brand’s website where they can snap up their fave new beauty buy.

So far, a variety of lipstick shades and finishes have been built into the feature with further makeup categories planned for development in the future.

A smorgasbord of major beauty brands have already jumped on board including bareMinerals, NYX Professional Makeup, YSL Beauté, Lancôme, Urban Decay, Neutrogena, Estee Lauder, and Sephora.

Pinterest’s ‘Try On’ feature has now been launched in the United States and the Australian launch date shouldn't be too far behind. We’ll keep you updated as soon as we get word on when we can expect to be virtually trying on lipsticks in Australia!

YouTube also recently launched a virtual makeup try-on tool. Check out the story here.
