Shay Mitchell takes multi-masking to a whole new level

A masking routine full of weird and wonderful steps

We all know that nothing cures a bad bout of the skin (and Sunday) blues quite like a masking sesh. But for Shay Mitchell, the self-care process takes on a whole new meaning.

The 34-year-old recently shared an inside look at the chaos that is her extensive skin care routine in a Vogue YouTube tutorial, and let’s just say, when it comes to multi-masking, the Pretty Little Liars actress doesn’t play around.

After gently ice-rolling her face, Mitchell likes to place a set of under-eye masks under her big brown peepers. “It just allows your eye makeup to sit on [the skin] really nice without being super greasy underneath,” she explained.

“You’re going to see quite a few masks,” Mitchell admitted about her routine. “The reason why I like them is because they’re very hydrating. I put them on and I don’t have to think about it.”

“I like the drama of it,” she added as she grinned cheekily at the camera. “I think they look funny, I like to scare people – when I’m travelling especially – or just when I’m at home.”

Next up, it’s Patchology FlashPatch 5 Minute Lip Gels ($21 at MECCA) AKA “hydrating lip gels”.

While the rest of us may skimp on lip care, it’s a necessary step for the 34-year-old, who admits that when she has the time she “really likes to go full-out” with her skin care because “why not? It feels good”.

“I’m also going to do this forehead mask,” said Mitchell as she furrowed her brow for effect. “As you can see I make a lot of expressions [on] my face.”

The mask is  the familiar skyn ICELAND Hydro Cool Firming Face Gels ($51 at MECCA), which she set above her brows.

“Everything feels so cool,” said the actress with all masks in place. “I’m like a skin mask superhero right now.”

Mitchell assured her audience after using “specific” masks for each area that the 111SKIN Anti Blemish Bio Cellulose Facial Mask ($169 at MECCA) will leave her face “fully covered.”

Please pause for Mitchell’s top tip when it comes to masking: “I never like to waste the juice of a mask,” she explained as she tipped the remaining serum into her open palm. “I pour it into my hands and I rub it on my neck.”

Now we’re up to the part where things started to get a little weird…

“I have this really cool item that I actually found when I was in Japan because I obviously scour the whole skin section there.”

“[AVAJAR] Perfect V Lifting Premium Plus Mask ($12.50 at Lila Beauty), which looks like this,” the actress stated as she pulled out a pink chin-lifting strap into view of the camera. To secure it? “You just put it under [your chin] like this, and then you wrap it around your ears, like so,” she explained.

“It kind of feels like it’s doing something,” says Mitchell as she compares it to, “those bands you use when you’re working out.”

Lastly, it’s on to a full-face silicone mask extravaganza from Honest Beauty – “thanks Jessica!”.

“I want to keep all of this on for like a good 15 minutes and this is crucial to keeping everything tucked.”

Unfortunately, the Honest Beauty Reusable Magic Silicone Sheet Mask isn’t available downunder, but this Nurse Jamie Face Wrap Skin Perfecting Silicone Mask ($43.91 at REVOLVE) should do the trick if you’d like to follow along with Mitchell’s routine at home.

The actress then takes her Nurse Jamie Instant UpLift Massaging Beauty Roller ($101 at REVOLVE) and sweeps the tool in upwards motions over her multiple layers of face masks, before declaring to her audience: “I also have a mask for my hoo-has.”

“[Booby Tape’s] 24 Karat Breast Masks ($24.99 at Chemist Warehouse) [because] your boob’s need love too, you know? Especially if you’re going to an event and you have a low cut dress.”

“Okay guys, so there you have it,” said Mitchell as she made her final adjustments, her gold breast masks peeking out from the top of her chemise. “I’m not being a little R-rated, trust that this is on correctly.”

“This goes right around here and here,” the actress said as she cupped her hands in circles over her breasts. “Then what I like to do for my chest area while all of this is sitting is use this La Mer Moisturising Cool Gel Cream ($490 at MECCA).”

And that’s that. “Ta-da!” exclaimed Mitchell with an air of finality.

Well, at least in terms of masking – you can catch the rest of Mitchell’s 58 step routine here.
