Your guide to the most elite makeup looks on 'Euphoria'

Glitter tears have practically become synonymous with the show, so there really is no better place to start. Davy broke down exactly what the iconic look represents (as well as how the team achieved the effect). "This scene is all about what it cuts to right after; AKA the “until”; AKA the dichotomy of the euphoria vs. reality in Rue’s drug use. This is the watery glitter tear version [and] the revolving lighting and blurry focus is what makes this makeup look so animated, and also like a galaxy. @samlev00’s a genius!"

There's a reason Jules' makeup was unlike anything we were seeing on the streets (or even our screens) prior to Euphoria; she was quite simply no longer down to play by the 'normal' makeup rules, and in turn changed them entirely. "Jules doesn’t have an attention span for real life anymore," Davy explained re: Jules' 'more is more' vibe.

Maddy's makeup (including this rhinestone-rimmed sapphire cat eye) may be stunning, but it's also designed to give a window into her character's complexities. "There’s more to Maddy’s makeup than rhinestones and cat eyes! Underneath her elaborate armour, Maddy feels the pain of crushed childhood dreams and a psychotic and abusive boyfriend," Davy explained. "I designed her makeup to have a fantastical element to it because despite her fierce outward personality, Maddy is a diehard romantic who wants to transcend the 'loveless marriage' that is her home life."

Did we all want to be Cassie on Halloween? Um, yes. Well, actually, we did until we didn't. Her makeup barely faltered even through all the drama, though. "This look was all about letting Sydney’s eyes get a turn to sparkle," Davy shared. "I love the effect this glitter has throughout the whole episode," she added, noting that she used glitter liner "applied all over the lid with a concealer brush (I do that a lot when I don’t want a blendy look)."

Kat's Halloween look was also incredible, drawing inspiration from pop art and of course, her costume (Thana from Ms. 45). Davy didn't have a whole lot to say about it, but still delivered a rave review. "I have very little words for this look. I just ❤️ it so much and I can’t believe I got to put a look like this on TV - thank you."

Davy affectionately refers to this work of art (AKA Jules' Halloween aesthetic) as "Jules’ version of Claire Danes’ Juliet." Danes may not have rocked glitter brows in the 1996 Romeo and Juliet film, but hey, this is Euphoria and this is Jules' take, okay? "I wanted to evoke something ethereal, romantic and gothic (pastel shimmery coral and gold version of gothic). Also, I was looking for an opportunity to do glitter brows on someone!" Opportunity utilised (and utilised well, may we add).

Onscreen, this Maddy eyeliner moment may have appeared like a classic gold wing, but the devil is in the details, right? Right; it's actually a tiny chain applied with mini studs along the lash line. "While in the jewelry-making section of Michael’s one day looking for more fun things to glue on faces, I spotted some gold chains and knew immediately that I wanted Maddy to have chain eyeliner at some point, preferably during a moment of conflict. The way [the makeup team] tapered the tiny gold studs is essential to this look, because [without] them the chain would end abruptly, and we can’t have any abruptly ending chains around here."

Jules' 'white eyeliner clouds' are definitely a fan favourite from the first season. Luckily, when quizzed about the product used to create them, Davy shared some white liner wisdom: "Any white liquid eyeliner will do. I think I used a NYX [liner] and then on a different day I used a Lime Crime one. You can pour some out on a palette and apply with a skinnier and stiffer brush than the one that comes with the product. There are lots of eyeliner pen products out now that I think would be easier to do this look with though."

Maddy's mainstays may have been rhinestones and jewel tones, but she certainly knows her way around a bright look, too. We happen to think this underrated neon moment was one of her absolute finest. Davy summed up her thoughts (and echoed ours) in a succinct caption: "Maddy serving FIERCE".

Rue's finale look was all about the growth she'd experienced throughout the show's duration. "This one tied all of Rue’s glitter tear looks together from the season," Davy noted. "I wanted to create an iridescent look that would sparkle blue/purple in some light and look more red in other light. I got to make @zendaya look a little more dolled up here, as it was supposed to be Jules who got Rue ready for winter formal, and the idea here was that Jules was making her look more feminine."

"Kat continues experimenting with different looks this season, but in a way I didn’t expect," Davy explained of Kat's sophomore season aesthetic. "Instead of taking the goth x grunge x fairy-inspired direction that I had imagined, creator/director/writer and the all-around visionary @samlev00 challenged me to bring a playful freshness to Kat’s makeup. You’ll see that many of her looks involve a super clean lower lash line and bright colours. I interpreted this as Kat still being kind of new to wearing makeup, and still very much using it to help figure out who she wants to be."

The only things sharper than Maddy's quips this season ("b*tch, you better be joking" among them) are her razor-sharp wings. Our fave so far? This double cat eye, which saw her and Cassie's characters showing off their biggest differences (poignant in the midst of the whole Nate mess). "Some of y’all have commented about the total opposite energies that Cassie and Maddy’s double wings have in this scene, and to that I say YEP exactly!" Davy confirmed. "The double wings totally mirror each other." Wondering how? Cassie's is soft and delicate, whereas Maddy's is strong and sharp; talk about makeup that means something.

Speaking of Cassie's double wing, Davy broke down the details: "I knew I wanted to bring an ethereal soft 1960s energy for this look, so I pulled pastel looks with exaggerated eyelashes to get inspired. For anything that calls for a retro look, I love looking at makeup ads and magazine covers from whichever era I’m going for. I wanted this makeup to look beautiful and sweet on Cassie, and just a little bit babydoll costume-y. I love how her meltdown (AKA @sydney_sweeney ‘s performance) erupts and like burns through this look, morphing it from soft delicate babydoll to something a bit more deranged. Seeing how actors bring makeup to life is the coolest part of being a makeup artist I think!"

We're seeing Lexi come into her own this season, and so it makes sense that she's steering away from copying her friends, and moving toward creating an aesthetic of her own. Exhibit A: this fun but simple pop of colour. "Did y’all see that Lexi was actually wearing coral eyeshadow?! It was hiding in the shadows," Davy shared alongside this snap. We've been there, Lexi; you nail your makeup and then you spend the night in a rudely dimly lit room. That's why pre-party selfies are a must.

Jules' eye looks may be slightly more subtle in the second season, but they're still incredible, because well, it's Jules. And so, no, neither Davy nor we could pick a single standout. She took to Instagram to describe a few of the best: "More white whiskers but these ones we called horns. Tiny X concepted by @hunterschafer ! Notice the little white shadow behind the X to give it a little more dimension. Green and chartreuse marbled flame eye — so fun and refreshing to paint! And my fave: the barbed wire-looking effect over terracotta lids."

Kat actually rocked a double wing of her own later in the season (in more ways than one). Not only was her black feline flick layered over periwinkle glitter liner, but there was a reverse wing (featuring the same colour stacking) applied to her inner corner as well. "We love a slightly upturned wing with inner corner definition and a bare lower lash line," Davy said of the look. "Simple and classic with a little dash of colour and glitter. The light caught the glitter beautifully in this episode."

"My favourite hidden gem from [this] episode was @maudeapatow‘s makeup by @tlangmakeup," Davy shared. "Of course Lexi did a special eye look for Maddy’s bday! We wanted to showcase another type of wing, the downward turned more Twiggy style wing, accented with lower lash line dots. Instead of fake lashes on her lower lash line, it felt more Lexi-like for her to have drawn on her own unique version of something reminiscent of fake lashes. I love how this makes the look feel slightly less glam. And even tho it’s stylized, the look feels timid enough to suit our girl. Tara and Maude’s choice of lilac eyeshadow and plum liner."

Rue may have had the best heart-stopping one liners in her intervention scene ('Hey Cass'...), but Kat definitely had the best makeup. Davy even shared a little advice on how to recreate the look: “Friends with hooded eyes, try this colour block technique! Apply colour right up through your crease and beyond it. Colour-blocking is the easiest way to get a bold and graphic look that can also serve as a wing of sorts! It does not rely at all on where your crease is or how much eyelid space you have.”

The best bit of Lexi's play (besides her killer red dress and Ethan's musical moment, of course)? The flashback/homage to Maddy's incomparable butterfly eye makeup. "tysm @alexademie for letting my butterfly makeup dreams come true !!! 🦋🦋🦋🦋 @donni.davy wanted elevated looks this season and I think we knocked it out of the park with her season 2 cheerleading looks," Demie's makeup artist Alexandra French shared of the aesthetic.
