Besides reaching for long-wearing foundation formulas, another way to seriously make your base last longer is with a makeup primer. What we love about the latest slew that have just hit the market is that they do so much more than simply help your makeup stay put. They also contain secret powers that can quickly - and effectively - up hydration levels in your skin, smooth the surface, and even eliminate oily or dry areas on your face. Here are eight of the absolute best primers that are worth trying this season.
Best for: dry skin
You may usually rely on your serum or moisturiser in the morning to keep your complexion hydrated, but it doesn’t hurt to get some extra help from your primer, too. Fenty Beauty’s Pro Filt'r Hydrating Primer should be your go-to if your skin errs on the drier side; it contains sodium hyaluronate and grapeseed oil to improve moisture levels.
Best for: normal skin
Ciaté London Watermelon Burst Primer is like a yummy shot of watermelon juice for your face, and we’re all for it. Discover ingredients like watermelon extract, vitamin E and hyaluronic acid, which all help increase hydration without making your skin oily or your foundation slide off.
Best for: improving your skin
We’ve never come across a Revlon product we didn’t like (especially from the PhotoReady range) and the Prime Plus Perfecting + Smoothing Primer is no exception. This skin care-meets-makeup product brings together hyaluronic acid and vitamin B5 to make skin look smoother and more plump not just instantly, but in the long-run, too. Clever!
Best for: oily skin
You can’t go past REN Clean Skincare Perfect Canvas Clean Primer to mattify your skin without making it look flat. Agave extract is the secret ingredient that helps keep your oily skin click-free, whilst the addition of probiotic extract works to improve skin cell renewal and the overall health of your skin.
Best for: dull skin
Want to up the glow factor of your makeup? Now you can easily do so - even without using an illuminating foundation - with Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk Hydrating Primer. We’re loving the quick absorption of this product which won’t leave your skin feeling sticky.
Best for: tight budgets
At an absolute steal (you’ll get change from $15!), Sportsgirl Time To Prime - Blur & Matte Primer is a no-brainer if you’re after an all-in-one primer that can prep your skin, blur fine lines, keep oiliness at bay and smooth your complexion. Ace.
Best for: darkening the colour of your foundation
Summer can be a tricky time when it comes to matching your foundation to your complexion, so it can be helpful to use a tinted primer like Clarins SOS Primer in Mocha to subtly darken your base. Instead of applying this primer before foundation, try adding a few drops of both products on the back of your hand, mixing it with a brush and applying them together.
Best for: hiding fine lines
If you’re like us and are *obsessed* with coconuts, then you’re going to want to give Marc Jacobs Beauty Under(cover) Blurring Coconut Face Primer a whirl this summer. This blurring product contains not just one but an impressive FIVE forms of coconut (we’re talking coconut water, coconut fruit juice, and coconut fruit extract, just to name a few) to nourish your skin while it boosts the longevity of your foundation.
