New year, new hair

Beauty Crew Beauty Writer / January 15 2020

If you suck at following through with your new year’s resolutions and have already broken all those good intentions (hey, cleansing your face at 3am after a big night out is easier said than done), there’s one easy way to welcome a fresh start: with a new haircut. There’s just something so cathartic about chopping off your dead weight from 2019 and getting ready for the shiny new chapter that is 2020.

And it’s pretty fitting, because according to Hair Director and Master Colourist at MOB HAIR, Tarryn Cherniayeff, all of the latest hair trends are perfect for starting fresh. Whether you want to tweak your current hairstyle, or completely revamp your entire look, we’ve pulled together the top styles that’ll you’ll see everywhere in 2020.

#1 / Chin-grazing bob

According to Cherniayeff, the bob trend is showing no signs of slowing down. In fact, 2020 is going to be an even bigger year for the already-popular cut – with all different styles coming back in a big way. Versatile and fuss-free on the styling front, it’s no wonder short hair is so appealing.

Take your cues from celebrities like Kaia Gerber and draw attention to your cheekbones and jawline with a crisp, blunt cut. The cool thing is, your styling options are almost endless. You can add some textured waves for a voluminous finish, wear it sleek and straight, part it in the middle or flip it over to one side to completely change your whole look. To give your hair extra bounce on those no-wash days, make sure you have something like Kristin Ess Style Reviving Dry Conditioner in your kit.

Not ready to take the leap? “If you don’t want to commit to cutting off all your hair into a short bob, grab your iron and curve your hair under,” says Cherniayeff. “Once the hair has cooled, tuck it under and pin it, pull a few pieces out around the face and this will give you a temporary bob for the night. For visuals, jump onto YouTube or Instagram – there are plenty of videos showcasing these types of styles and they are super easy.”

#2 / The new pixie cut

Need a break from long hair? If you’ve ever considered killer short pixie cut, now is the time. There are two new ways to wear the pixie: either go short all over, like Charlize Theron or Zoe Kravitz, or go heavy on top and tapered on the sides, like Kirstin Stewart (this will give you more texture to play with).

We are loving the current twist on the pixie cut, because it isn’t styled to be specifically masculine or feminine – it’s perfectly genderless. It signifies a kind of freedom, and we think it’s great to see a trend like this moving forward into 2020. The best part? It’s super low maintenance (say goodbye to blow-drying your hair for ages) – it’s pretty much the wash-and-go style of your dreams.

#3 / Invisible layers

The ’70s called and *everyone* is answering. For someone not wanting to lose their length (no shade), Cherniayeff says “Heavily layered rock-chick, long hair” is all the rage right now. Soft and versatile, this kind of cut is characterised by tons of invisible layers (usually starting below the chin) and is the perfect way to add texture, volume and depth without sacrificing the length of your hair.

Concerned you won’t be able to pull it off? Don’t be. As long as you have mid-length to long hair, you’ll look like you were born with this style – because this layering technique works wonders on all different face shapes (psst…it looks seriously awesome with over-the-brow bangs!). Cherniayeff says to look to celebrities like Dakota Johnson and Miley Cyrus (pre-mullet chop) for style inspiration.

To keep your locks soft, tousled and relaxed, invest in a good texturising spray. We like Redken Fashion Waves 07 Sea Salt Spray.
