More often than not, the low-key ponytail is the hairstyle of choice when we don’t have the time or energy to style, or it’s the default look for a greasy-hair day.
We’ve got 11 ponytail ideas that are guaranteed to inspire you to choose the upstyle instead of turning to it as a last resort.
This is one for those who have some time on their hands and braiding skills in their repertoire. Start by creating a few tight braids on your head, then weave some ribbon between them, and finish with a high and tousled ponytail. Bonus points by doing like Rita Ora and matching your winged eyeshadow to your hair accessory!
Try: Spotlight Birch Swiss Velvet Ribbon
Super low and loose
Singer Ciara makes a strong case for embracing a style that has very little structure. Keep the style chic by wrapping some of your hair around the base of your ponytail, and limiting the face-framing pieces to a minimum.
Full of texture
The more texture in your ponytail, the fuller and more voluminous it will look, so the key is to keep your hair quite loose and to up the ante on your texturising spray. You can also follow these steps to Barbara Palvin’s effortless ponytail.
Try: Toni & Guy Casual Rough Texturiser
A great idea for those with length. Section your hair into a several ‘bubbles’ like Kendall Jenner’s done to give your ponytail a quirky finish.
Try: Scunci Clear Polybands
Pretty Little Liar’s Lucy Hale’s ponytail is all chic business in the front, and party at the back – the perfect twist for those who are pro-braiders. To copy this one, separate your hair into three vertical sections, and tightly braid the middle one before gathering all three sections at the nape of your neck and securing.
Try: Oribe Créme For Style
Sleek meets tousled
Have the best of both ponytail worlds by doing like Lea Michele and creating a centre part and keeping the hair on your crown smooth and sleek, and the hair in the tail effortlessly messy and full.
Try: ghd Tail Comb
Tiny side plaits
Do like Alicia Vikander, and take small triangular sections from either side of your part and plait them backwards towards the centre of your head to add some dainty dimension to your ponytail.
