“To every boy I’ve ever loved before…”

Cole Sprouse, Harry Styles and Brad Pitt. What do all these men have in common? They all found their niche as floppy-haired teenage heartthrobs.

And now we’re following in their footsteps and emulating their soft boy cachet with the boyfriend bob hair trend.

Forget the bixie hair cut and wolf cut, because according to Adam Reed (UK Editorial Ambassador for L’Oréal Professionnel), the boyfriend bob, AKA “a square outlined, shorter, blockier bob” is the next big chop.

"It’s so flattering, wearable and totally changeable depending on your personal style," he explained to Glamour UK.

How to style a boyfriend bob

The beauty of the boyfriend bob is its versatility. It can be more manicured and polished with a smooth sleek finish or texture can be added for an unexpected edge.

"Have a conversation with your stylist and they will be able to guide what will suit you best,” said Reed. They should take into consideration “your face shape, how you style day to day and so on.”

“If you have an image in mind then a photo is always helpful too,” he advises.

What styling products should you be using?

Texturising products are a must, according to Reed. His favourite? L’Oréal Professionnel Tecni.ART Pli Thermo-Modelling Spray ($27.95 at MECCA) for extra grip during styling.

A root-volumising powder, such as Davroe Cloud Texture Powder ($26.95 at Adore Beauty) also comes in handy for amping up the drama of your boyfriend bob when applied at the roots, or giving that beachy texture by massaging the product through mid-lengths and ends of the hair.

For a more polished finish, opt for a nourishing, shine-enhancing hair serum like Kérastase Elixir Ultime Beautifying Hair ($65 at Adore Beauty) through mid-lengths and ends.
