Only got five minutes? These hairstyles are for you

Time and patience: we regularly struggle with both, especially when it comes to styling our hair. We’ve lost count of the times we’ve considered chopping off all our hair just so we can reap the low-maintenance rewards of a pixie cut. But before you go reaching for those scissors in frustration, we are here to save you. We’ve tracked down 12 seriously effortless and easy hairstyles that are a lazy girl’s dream come true. And they look amazing.
Just add bobby pins
Celebrity inspiration: Gigi Hadid
With a little creativity, bobby pins can play a starring role in your hairstyle. We’ve got an entire gallery full of ideas for styling your hair with bobby pins, but this one is our fave for those who want a no-fuss hair look - just add a bobby pin above the ear on either side, create some volume at the crown and part your hair down the middle. Job done.
Celebrity inspiration: Elizabeth Olsen
Plaits are the lazy girl’s version of braids and let's be honest, they can look just as intricate. We love the loose style of Elizabeth Olsen’s double plait here, which nails that ‘I woke up like this’ bedhead vibe.
The low ponytail
Celebrity inspiration: Jessica Biel
Now, this is just *one* example of how a ponytail can save you when you have zero time but still need a pretty hair look that’s going to impress. (Psst, we have plenty more ponytail inspo over here.) Jessica’s ultra-loose ponytail owes its elegance to that smooth and perfectly-in-place finish, while the wrap-around hair tie brings an edgy twist.
The textured ponytail
Celebrity inspiration: Olivia Munn
In contrast to Jessica Biel’s low ponytail, this one is all about texture and volume. Prep hair with a volumising mousse like Kérastase Mousse Bouffante and either use your curling tong to create waves, or if you’ve got natural texture in your hair, play it up with a sea salt spray like Redken Fashion Waves 07 Sea Salt Spray. Part your hair down the middle and finger-comb your mane back into a low pony. Tease the lengths of your ponytail to give it a thicker appearance.
A messy bun
Celebrity inspiration: Blake Lively
Blake has done a stellar job of making this messy updo look complex and chic, but we promise you it’s little more than bun that’s only been pulled halfway through, with the ends pinned down with bobby pins. Texture in your hair is key, so spritz a texturising spray like Joico Beach Shake Texturizing Finisher and finger-comb your hair back into a high but loose bun.
Celebrity inspiration: Kendall Jenner
Thank you Kendall for reminding us that cute, easy hairstyles are possible with nothing more than a hair clip or two. This is low-fuss hair at its best. Want more inspiration on how to wear this old-school accessory? Here are three ways Kendall wore it.
The faux French braid
Celebrity inspiration: Julianne Hough
When you don't have time to fuss with a French braid, try this cheat’s version. Secure the top half of your hair at the crown, then plait the ends until you reach the nape of your neck. Combine the underneath section of hair with the top half and secure with a hair tie. Plait the lengths and voila! Easy yet impressive.
The textured lob
Celebrity inspiration: Hailey Baldwin
Adding texture is the best thing you can do to style your hair with minimal effort (regardless of whether you’ve got a pixie cut, bob, lob or long hair). Unlike straight hair which requires a smooth and perfected finish, you can get away with a wetter, dirtier or messier finish when your hair is tousled.
The rope plait
Celebrity inspiration: Maggie Q
Just when you thought it couldn’t get any easier than a traditional plait. The rope braid is even more foolproof - all you have to do is split your ponytail into two sections and twist them around one another. Given the simplicity of this hairstyle, make sure your strands are looking extra healthy and shiny (a good hair mask and a shine serum like Matrix Style Link Gloss Booster will do the trick) to up the glam factor.
Celebrity inspiration: Karlie Kloss
You can't beat a topknot when the brief calls for a simple, effortless and cool hairstyle. The go-to updo for off-duty models, as well as a regular on the red carpet, all you need to nail a topknot is a hair tie. Keep it sleek and tight for a sophisticated look, or go for an imperfect finish for that carefree ‘It’ girl vibe like Karlie here.
Celebrity inspiration: Gwyneth Paltrow
Hair accessories are back in a BIG way right now and they truly are the easiest way to jazz up your hair. Just clip or tie and you are good to go. Tip: When choosing your hair accessory, think about the occasion. Velvet and satin step things up a notch for an evening look, while colourful scarves add personality, and clips are oh-so-cute.
The tiny ponytail
Celebrity inspiration: Margot Robbie
Nothing fancy, just a unique take on the classic ponytail. Dress up straight hair with an extra-low ponytail like Margot’s here. Backcomb the underneath section to boost volume then comb the top layer for a smooth finish. Make sure you tie your ponytail tight and tuck any shorter layers that fall around the face behind your ears to keep the look sophisticated.
