The best celeb hair transformations of 2019… so far
Cut, colour and style makeovers to inspire your next hair overhaul
Beauty Crew Beauty Writer / August 15 2019
There isn’t a week that passes without a celeb showing off a hair makeover - whether a subtle tweak in length or style, or a drastic change in the form of a complete colour and cut overhaul.
Priyanka has been known to shake up her dark hair with copper highlights for a warm, sun-kissed splash, but this is the lightest we've ever seen her venture. We love the contrast of her blonde balayage against her natural hair colour.
The Aussie stunner took us by surprise when she chopped off her long honey hair and opted for a platinum blonde bob at the end of last year. She’s since, but now she’s taken things one step further with this chic and edgy boy cut. We like how she’s kept some length at the top so she can still play around with different looks.
The Grey’s Anatomy alum and Killing Eve star swapped her long hair and deep side part for a modern bob and short fringe. We love that she debuted her new style with so much texture and curl - her and our own Zoe Foster Blake are certainly paving the way for curly-haired girls to embrace styles they thought previously unattainable.
The focus may be on her partner A Star is Born’s Bradley Cooper at the moment, but let’s all take a moment to appreciate Irina’s gorgeous new bob, which she debuted at the 76th Golden Globe Awards. We just can’t decide if we prefer it when she wears it sleek and straight, or with a little texture...
The supermodel recently showed off a brand-new set of curtain bangs, courtesy of go-to hairstylist Jen Atkin. And while we’re pretty sure these ones are the work of some well-placed hair extensions, we’re ALL about this look and think Kendall should actually take the leap IRL. Where can we sign the petition?!
Karlie said goodbye to her lengthy blonde locks, cutting her hair into a short, choppy lob. Her fresh new hairstyle, which falls just below her jawline, features lots of face-framing layers for a fun, chic look.
We’re calling it: Julia Roberts’ new hairstyle is going to be the ‘do of the moment. The actress recently said goodbye to her signature long locks, trading them in for a stylish new shoulder-length bob, teamed with fresh blonde highlights. And it looks SO good. She shared her new look on Instagram and the Internet *lost* it. One fan wrote, “She has always had the best hair but this style looks AMAZING!”
Hailey Bieber ditched her signature creamy blonde hair during a recent photo shoot with Adidas for a drastic neon green hair colour with striking dark roots showing through. To complete the overall uber-cool vibe, hairstylist Florida Basallo styled her hair into a wet and wavy look with lots of piece-y texture.
Eva Mendes has embraced the red hair trend of 2019, taking to her Instagram to flaunt her newly minted strawberry-highlighted auburn hair. She captioned the selfie: ‘Strawberry feels forever’. Hairstylist Mikey Lorenzano helped the actress make the refreshing hair colour change from her signature warm brown locks to a red shade first – back in March, before opting for this summery, highlighted look in April.
Alison Brie has updated her signature chestnut brown hair and gone blonde for a role in husband Dave Franco’s upcoming film The Rental. She captioned the Instagram selfie: “When your husband asks you to ‘go blonde’ for a role...you say yes.” The Glow star opted for multiple shades of blonde for a more natural take on the hue, creating a layered mix of sandy blonde and a mid-tone brown.
Brie has traded in her signature blonde lob for a refreshing bob hairstyle. She debuted her new short hair at the launch of her friend Melinda Lee Holm’s beauty brand, MLH Sigil Fragrances. The Captain Marvel star’s new bob is decidedly more edgy, with soft, shaggy asymmetric layers that perfectly frame her face. She’s also opted for multi-dimensional shades of blonde with light brown roots, which provides more warmth to her complexion than her previously bleach blonde hair.
We recently took a look back at Maisie Williams’ beauty transformations over the eight seasons of Game of Thrones, but none of her dramatic changes compare to her most recent makeover. Maisie recently ditched the purple and pink locks she’s been rocking for the Game of Thrones final season press tour for a pale strawberry blonde hue. She kept her roots dark for an edgier take on one of this year’s hottest hair colours, and her signature blunt fringe has grown out a bit to now perfectly frame those sparkly grey-blue eyes. It’s unexpected, cool, and we like it.
Lily James has ditched her long blonde waves and swiftly jumped aboard the short bob train, which seems to be the haircut of the season amongst celebs, and with good reason; this blunt cut transcends trends. Straddling the line between effortless cool-girl hair and a sleek, minimalist bob, this elevated short hairstyle is perfect for the modern young woman. So chic.
January Jones has made a drastic change to her appearance by following in the footsteps of other celebs like Irina Shayk and Lily James. She chopped her mid-length icy blonde locks into a chin-length bob – sharing her makeover on Instagram with the caption: “So I changed my mind again. @bridgetbragerhair you’re a dream.” January’s hairstylist Brager shared on her own social media that January had in fact been ruminating on whether to make the chop for months, saying “January Jones has sent me blunt bob hair inspiration pics for months!!” and “We’ve been waiting for her (old) bangs to grow long enough to give that perfect blunt bob, middle part look. Patience,” she explained.
Reese Witherspoon has added herself to the ever-growing list of celebs who have decided to chop their hair off for summer. Unlike many of the styles we’ve seen lately however, Reese has opted for a slightly longer, below-the-shoulders length, with soft layers that frame her face. This interpretation of the trendy lob is a touch more versatile than the middle-parted, chin-length bob everyone is so fond of this season. Plus, this particular cut is a bit more forgiving if she decides to grow her hair out again. Smart cookie.
Kaia Gerber unveiled a summer hair transformation via Instagram over the weekend, which she coined as: “the drama cut”. The model has hair pro Sandy Hullett and Redken Global Director Guido Palau to thank for the flattering cut and colour, which, according to a press release shared by Palau, was all Kaia’s idea: “Kaia’s new haircut was actually inspired by her and her desire to change her look, we had been discussing cutting her hair for a little while now. She wanted it shorter, and for it to look a little more ‘boyish’.”
Zendaya debuted a radical new hair colour while on the press tour for her upcoming film Spider Man: Far From Home. The young star has ditched her natural curly brown hair for a stunning deep shade of red. The change was so drastic that her fans on Twitter initially thought she was wearing a wig, but Zendaya quelled suspicions with the response: “I dyed it, semi-permanent”.
Rita Ora recently underwent a dramatic chop. The popstar cut her long hair into a textured short hairstyle. The new ‘do features short sides and long layers on top and she’s ditched the balayage for a striking platinum shade. She shared the change via Instagram with the caption: “not supposed to be showing you this look yet but F*** it coz you guys are the best and we reached 15 mill! #happypridemonth ❤️”
Queer Eye’s Antony Porowski is bringing back bleached blonde hair and we’re not sure how we feel about it. Giving off major grungy, surfer-boy vibes (a far cry from his former well-groomed ‘do), he’s also decided to grow out his hair for a tousled, bed-head look. We wonder if fellow Queer Eye castmate and hairstylist, Jonathan Van Ness approves…
A far cry from her long chocolate brown waves, pop star Camila Cabello debuted this sultry wet-look bleach blonde bob as a teaser for her Find U Again music video. The new ‘do features a brow-grazing fringe and dark roots, and is far edgier than any style we’ve seen on her before. Though we suspect this change might be a wig, admittedly we’re kind of into it.
Emma Roberts was spotted in LA sporting mid-length chocolate brown waves with a center-parting. Given that the star was seen a few weeks prior with a shoulder-grazing, side-parted blonde bob, I think we can safely assume she’s achieved her thick waves with the help of extensions. Nonetheless, we are *loving* this wearable new look on Emma.
We can’t think of the last time Lily Aldridge strayed from her long brunette hair; in fact, the only notable update to her hair in recent years has been the odd dalliance with caramel balayage highlights. So when she revealed this choppy textured, bleached blonde shag cut with dark roots on her Instagram, it definitely caught our attention. The sad news? It was just a wig, but we’re all for a more permanent change!
Serena Williams has adopted a blonder look of late. The tennis star revealed her latest hair change at the Sports Illustrated Fashionable Fifty party (she was their 2019 special issue cover star) and we are in awe of her new look. She’s lightened her roots from black to a warm chocolate brown hue, and added a stunning face-illuminating caramel blonde colour through the lengths.
Elementary and Charlie’s Angels star Lucy Liu has debuted a significantly shorter cut from her usual long layers. The blunt and extremely chic bob is her first departure from her signature long hair since her foray into blonde back in 2018; Lucy made waves when hairstylist Victoria Hunter took her jet-black hair to a creamy shade of blonde. Hunter told Today Style that the process was extremely tedious and took four rounds of bleach, balayage highlights and a root smudge. Thankfully, this new look appears to be more manageable and low-key in comparison.
Lindsay Lohan’s long red hair has been her signature style for years, but surprisingly, she decided to ditch the look for an on-trend summer lob. While Lindsay usually wears her hair styled in loose waves and curls, this new cut has seen her opt for a more laidback hairstyle with a casual side-swept, layered fringe that she’s pushed back out of her face. And, can we just say Lindsay, *you* look sexy with your hair pushed back. Sorry, we’ll stop now.
FKA Twigs just debuted a wild new hair hue via her Instagram and we think there’s never been a more appropriate time to describe a look as 'straight fire' than now. She’s gone for a very dramatic red shade and we’re completely in love.
American singer Halsey has just undergone one seriously epic hair transformation and honestly, we don’t think we’ve seen anything like this before. She’s gone for full-on colourful bangs that give the impression of an actual rainbow hovering above her face and we are vibing on this wild look.
Actress Rachel Bilson has been dabbling with subtle balayage over the years, but has never strayed too far from her naturally dark locks… Until today when we got the shock of our lives as she debuted this gorgeous new blonde ‘do. We're loving the multidimensional, sun-bleached colour - it's giving us major O.C vibes!
Miley Cyrus’s latest hair update has taken her Hannah Montana-inspired cut to new heights with a bleached blonde dye job. The Wrecking Ball singer appears to be growing out her fringe and embracing her natural wavy texture for an undone, beachy look that we are loving.
While some people spend their summer working on their tan, Bella Hadid has used the warm weather as inspiration to go blonder. The model was first spotted in July with caramel highlights and since then she has progressively lightened her hair colour, eventually landing on this honey blonde hue.
